I would really love a STA level.
Anyone built one of the Drip STA's?
The biggest problem I have is the fact I am in Australia, the shipping on the parts is insane.
It would be great, to source all this stuff from one location (ala hairball).
any thoughts, advice hints?
cheers

If you get a case from me, you can have parts all shipped to me then I can send you one package. I've done that for a few guys. Saves on shipping.

According to the Drip site this thing is only $900 all in? That's killer. Anyone built one of these? Looks pretty basic, right?

A lot of big name pros have bought case for them from me. I still need to build one myself.
Sal has one, so hopefully he will comment.

Drip kinda sucks when it comes to communicating about when they'll be back in stock. Is he the only one who provides PCBs for this project?

I think you are best to send Drip a email. They go fast like the CAPI stuff.

Hi Wiz, the Gates Sta-Level is a not too complicated circuit. As long as the parts, esp. transformers and inductor for the PSU (and tubes of course) are obtainable, it could be a cool project for a point-2-point build, too. Like the Pultec... You would gain a lot of experience from this, too. This is also the original way, the unit was build. Don't be too distracted from the bunch of cables. If you build such a unit, you for sure want to dive into the circuit anyway and understand what is happening in there! Looks like a very rewarding project...you guys all seem to have much love for the sta... This way you would be independent from Drip distribution. Found the schematic in 5 sec. on google. Best regards, Martin

I mean, this way you maybe have shipping of the case and the iron (transformers) and could source the rest of parts locally in Australia...should be possible. That's pretty much the way i build my first gear. Except, i used cases from junk and drilled my own frontpanels....

I thought I read somewhere that the Drip Sta ended up being around $1900 when using high quality parts? Yikes.

Yeah, my friend who built my Drip put a 6 position release mod. The original 2 release speeds (measured in hours ) plus 4 faster releases.

How much was the total for the build? I was told between $1600-1800, but there were a bunch of upgrades. Forget about that $900 estimate on the Drip site.

Well, hopefully next week I will have.....two!!!! 8)
I only want one but the guy was selling two as a package, so I may end up selling one down the track.
These are built by the same gent who built my drip la2a, so I am rat keen to get them.
I am going to look into adding the release time mod.
Woo. And hoo

So, my two STAs arrived.
First, they both sound like each other. So thats cool 8)
Question. Mine have meters, that the scale on them are not like the GATES meters scale which runs from 0 to 50dB of compression.
My meter reads from +3 to -20dB like a normal VU meter does.
Now , obviously the scale on my meter is wrong, well wrong is the wrong word.
I can hear it compressing way more than 1dB and I think if I were to "sticky tape" the gates meter background over mine, it would be saying 10dB on the gates meter... make sense.
The needles would move the same, just the readout changes.
Soooooo whats your question Wiz you ask.....
those who have a DRIP STA.... what did you do about this...?
I found a post on a forum somewhere where a guy arranged to get a few custom made meters, but they were pretty expensive.
Curious.
Of course insert standard internet answer below...
"use your ears"
of course.
cheers
