There is some confusion about the new release; here's the skinny from gannon from UA from UA forum:

We are trying to support as many workflows and installation needs as possible with version 7.7. Both FireWire and Thunderbolt are available depending on your needs. But, while Thunderbolt and FireWire can and do work together, PCIe audio drivers and FireWire audio drivers do not.
v7.7.0 is compatible with Mac and PC and Apollo functions exactly as it did with all previous versions. You can connect Apollo to your Mac or PC with Thunderbolt or FireWire and all of the FireWire functionality is available - including the back panel FireWire ports. If you need to move your Apollo between Mac and PC systems and want to use Thunderbolt or Firewire interchangeably to connect, this is the build for you. There is nothing wrong with this solution and it works great. Windows users can use Thunderbolt with this build, even though it's unsupported, because Windows recognizes the FireWire Audio in the Thunderbolt stream.
v7.7.1 is compatible with Mac only and introduces PCIe audio drivers for all Apollos. We announced this driver set would be released for Apollo and Apollo 16 since January, and this is the first release that includes them. PCIe audio drivers displace the FW driver set - we can't use both protocols on our hardware simultaneously. If you are a Mac user, have a Thunderbolt port and only need to connect to Macs, this is the build for you. We have no plans for PCIe audio on the Windows platform because, even though it's an Intel protocol, there are no embedded PCIe audio drivers in the Windows OS at this time.
Apollo is an evolving platform and enables us to take advantage of new technologies like Thunderbolt as they become available. Our goal is to offer options that support new and existing protocols as completely as possible. With v7.7.0 and 7.7.1, there are options for Mac/Thunderbolt/PCIe audio, Mac/Thunderbolt/FireWire, Mac/FireWire, PC/Firewire and PC/Thunderbolt/FireWire (not supported).Hopefully, one of these will suit your needs.
I hope this helps.
Cheers!
