EmRR, what does removing the foam do to these EV mics (besides prevent the inevitable crumble)? Does it change things sonically? Make it more susceptible to pops or wind? Any sense in replacing the foam? Thanks in advance…

Any sense in replacing the foam? Thanks in advance… You can put new open cell foam in if needed. I have before, just don’t have any. I won’t comment on sonic changes with and without because it’d be conjecture; without paying very close attention in a controlled manner you don’t hear any change. It of course is more susceptible to wind pops without. For most uses it’s not a concern. I’ve removed and in some cases put new foam in all my other EV’s, as they all were starting to decay from age. RE-16’s, RE-20, 635A’s, 654, 666’s. Consider it a variation on the trend of removing screen layers from condenser mics.

Any sense in replacing the foam? Thanks in advance… It's also there to prevent moisture and dust build-up when used as a hand held half-swallowed ENG mic. If used with a pop filter and properly stored, it will be stellar for years You don't want to have deteriorating foam in there! Edit note: originally in haste I typed "It's there to prevent" I meant to type ALSO... because the primary function is as a plosive filter, and most know that but some might have been confused or taken me for an eejit (ok, sometimes I can be).
EDIT NOTE 2: There are no specific ENT mics as ericn pointed out, but Electronic News Gathering i.e. ENG mics, are a thing.

I think you meant ENG but they hold them at waist level more than eat them, I don’t know an ENT who would recommend swallowing the mic, plenty of singers who EAT mics and should probably see a good ENT though. EV foam absolutely sucks, but easy to replace after 40 years of use.

LOL It only gets funnier when I tell you my wife was waiting for patient in ENT with an ENT surgeon when she texted me as I was typing a thumb twiddling in ENT so I sent her a link and I was told we both had the whole team in stitches.

P.S. If you need an incentive to eat microphones, EV Foam is delicious!
