at a guys house...Yamaha HM80 monitors, Focusrite 56, crappy sub...nothing but a small Waves bundle and all in the box. Couldn't really tell a lot about it there - and I kept telling him that. Just tried to get it sounding as good as I could possibly get it to sound. I dreaded getting home to hear it...
And it was freaking awesome. The bottom end was too loud and the vox could come up a bit...but holy crap...I swear, sometimes I think I should just sell all this shit and buy an Apollo and be done with it.

HS80M monitors are great monitors for one. Secondly, I've mixed at folk's houses and it's turned out more decently than I expected, even though it sounded bad in the room. Sometimes you just go with the gut and it's OK, other times, the gods smile on us and things just randomly turn out OK. I'd wager that it's a combination of gut instinct and luck. Also, CLA always says that he listens very low in volume and if it's kicking then it'll sound great anywhere. These types of small home studios usually have most of their acoustic issues arise at higher volumes. Small monitors and small rooms mean low volume, where few acoustic issues arise.. Again, a lucky combination. However, I still believe in the 90/10 ratio. 90 percent of the money is spent on the last 10% of the production, I.E., to take the mix to the next level would require all that expensive gear you are now questioning the relevance of..

Todd Rundgren did the Arena record on a laptop with Reason, Sonoma Wireworks Riffworks and a Line6 Toneport. It sounds good, but not as good as the Daft Punk record!

Lol….. John…. I don't think you have GAS….. I think you have a rare bi-polar addiction that's 4th dimensional, no other can experience it, and the entertainment of it is so enjoyed by your peers.

FWIW I mix on Yamaha HS80Ms and a Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56. I also highly recommend the Shure SRH940 headphones.

I have to say, it didn't particularly sound great in the room - I just tried to balance everything as well as I could. It just translated really well.
