I've got a drum part playing along to a loop (imagine that in modern country) and honestly, this is the first time I've attempted Beat Detective in PT's...Works pretty damn good, actually...There's nothing badly out of time or anything, but there's the more than the occasional flams without BD. Think I should lock it in or let it be natural like the good lord made it?

Nudge the loop hits, have mercy on the human feel, perfect time is for clocks imo

Meh. It's country pop. Quantized it is! You can also quantize to less than 100%.

don't know about protools, but in Logic Land, you can control the Q strength (how much it gets moved) and Q range (how far away from perfect time it will grab a note and move it by the Q strength) and Groove Template, and Groove Track (groove track is cool , will use any track in project, audio or midi and quantise other stuff to it)
but the power of effective quantise in Logic, lies in the Q strength and Q Range settings (normally for me around 75% Strength and Range 1/24 or 1/16 positive
I use quantise all the time during the "writing phase" and will use pitch correction during that as well, stops demo syndrome for me.
Demo Syndrome: an affliction whereby the solo songwriter/performer gets about 6 to 8 hours into the song, thinks its unreal... goes and gets a coffee and donut, comes back and realises everything blows, and you have sung flat and played a really sucky bass line and your rhythm guitar part is trampling over everything.
cheers

No half measures. Either quantize it to the click that used for the function of keeping things in time or do it off the floor with no click.
