Ok, as promised, quick and dirty, my DIY U47 clone on 12th fret slight turn in to neck joint, DIY C12 clone over shoulder facing bridge with slight turn in toward sound hole, both at least a foot and a half away, DIY VP28's w/40hz hi pass filter engaged, output faders wide open, and the input knobs at unity, absolutely no processing or eq whatsoever, she is what she is, and sorry for the poor playing, but it is what it is 8) Hope this helps someone, enjoy https%3A//soundcloud.com/tonycamp/u47c12-clones-over-shoulder-stereo-sample-no-processing-at-allhttps%3A//soundcloud.com/tonycamp/level-matched-u47c12-samplehere's an 88.2/24bit reso sample www.dropbox.com/s/8q8inovpcs65ybe/U47-C12%20hi%20res%20version.wav

Tony, that sounds beautiful, nice Zep reincarnation. How exactly do you place that C12 over shoulder? Are you coming from the back of the player? I like that smooth brightness, Wiz is right, it sounds a bit Floydish (apart from the footsteps...). Your playing is better than mine will ever be.

levon, thanx broman, the C12 is on a stand behind my back, and coming over my right shoulder. Im facing it almost straight at the bridge, just a slight turn in toward the sound hole, I would normally put some headphones on, and really dial both mics particularly into what i want to hear, but it was just me and the gear tonight, so it is what it is.

Ok, that's THE allusive acoustic sound that I chase and can never get so could you please walk me through this like the dummy I am. A picture of the array? Did you flip phase on your amps? Did you record to stereo track or multiple mono and then pan. Spare me no detail.

I'm curious about where you were in relation to the walls. It felt right heavy and almost like the left had a hair of delay. Maybe a little Haas going on. Cool sound.

Well done Tony, that's as good as anyone needs the miking of an acoustic guitar to be. At this level, I'm beginning to think that it's all about about production choices. On the ELA 251 vs. U67 shootout thread, I didn't feel that one mic was truly "better" than the other, only one mic was perhaps more versatile, ( U67), and for acoustic guitar, I preferred the 251. My friend's KM84's would be my go to mics if I owned them. So, I plan to try and plan better the next time I do any recording of acoustics. In my productions, I have two basic types of approaches for acoustics , one for a strumming bed on Alt. Country style songs, one with a featured, " almost unplugged" style, where the acoustic is the main feature with a vocal. Tony's recording seems like it would be sweet in my " acoustic featured" style recordings.
I found when I have a very "strummy" style song, it's harder to get to sit in tracks, and hope to get a WA1176 soon to dial back the dynamics 2%.

thanx fella's, It's still set up, i'll post a pic in a bit(you're gonna laugh at the location of the set up 8), but really there's not much more to tell that hasn't been stated in the first couple of posts.. I will try to answer a couple things further about what i did. Honestly it took about 15 minutes to set up, then i hit record, played a little, went back home and listened? a little too much boom, so i raised and backed off the mics.. I think i did this twice? then i said "ok, quick and dirty", and there you have it. cowboycoalminer , thanx man, i always appreciate your guitar tones! the phase was not flipped anywhere, it is multiple mono,U 47 hard left, and C12 hard R, and thats it. jcoutu1 no implemented Haas effect, there are 0 effects/eq on this, mic placement only(and like i said above, not particularly dialed in) the U47/C12 eq curves are very complimentary of each other IMV, and such that they pull across the image a little(in this case right to left) due to the hi extension hitting your ear faster from the C12, it really dramatizes the stereo effect i think, i thought that really came to life with the footsteps across the field of the mics, thats why i left it in there 8) Hope this helps T edit; BTW, 1993 taylor 710(sorry guys )

BTW - lets see a pic of them... well... like i said, i don't care much how they look(my kicked dog guitar proves that lol), but i'm inclined to get the 47 an accurate house because she sounds so nice, she deserves a good home 8) This IS the (still) set up i tracked the sample with last night, right in front of my washer/dryer lol, it's a friggin mess in here! This is the front of my converted garage, the cotton insulation you see on the left is the long wall of my main mix/cutting room(still under construction), it's about 20' long x 16' wide at the far end, and tapering down to as small as 13.5' or so on the console end, the entry door is on the left of the first pic. Garage doors, welding tables and paint cans on sale now at Ethan Winers site hope this helps

I shared this on Pensado's Students and people complained about soundcloud's streaming format. go figure... where do they suggest i put the sample Chuck? Also, i tracked this at 88.2/32 bit float. I bounced to 44.1/16 bit, i have no idea what soundcloud compression does? BTW, i'll jam Zep tunes with you any time Saxman!

The mismatch between ears (wearing earbuds) is a little strange, but it may just be a level thing.

The mismatch between ears (wearing earbuds) is a little strange, but it may just be a level thing. when i set up the mics, if i turned the vp28 input for the 47 a click higher it was too much, if i moved the 47 closer, it was too boomy, i left both Vp inputs at unity, PT faders at zero as i said i would touch nothing, i like the contrast myself, in a mix i'd put ambience on the left side, i could bump the left channel up a few db if anyone wants to hear that, it sounds different, still has a sweet little pull right to left, and still sounds just as "fine" to me

I wouldn't mind hearing it with the faders balancing the image.
