I was watching a video and like the sound, and it's on sale for $35 at the Waves site. What I'd really like is a REAL chamber!

I looooooove AR Chambers. Gets a lot of use over here. Not a generic or invisible reverb by any stretch. Loads of character and really fun to use.

Think I have it. Don't use it much but maybe should. I grab R4 or Phoenix verb or Little plate for ITB stuff these days.
I do knows it's super CPU intensive.
I've almost purchased an external UAD DSP thing just to have the Capitol Chambers plugin from UAD as I thought it sounded much better from demos. But I just can't do it. Can't buy into the UAD thing.

I liked it but it had two things going against it:
1. Huge CPU consumption 2. It’s Waves, so you buy it for $30 and then put it in mixes only to have to require a big WUP shortly after. Like the rest of my Waves purchases, it’s gone by the wayside

Like the rest of my Waves purchases, it’s gone by the wayside Waves screws you. I tried the Ren EQ with updated GUI and they introduced bugs that were not there in the original GUI version… And their newer plugins are totally unoptimized on initial release and still dirty. Meanwhile the Fuse stuff is the same price on sale, no update plan, and way better sound. The vcl-515 vs Waves RS124 is a total joke. The old PSP Oldtimer crushed it too for doing the Altec vacuum pumped overheads thing. Like the waves wasn’t bad but wasn’t competitive with older plugs like Oldtimer and mjuc.

I like it in the right context BUT: I have mixed feelings about their sampling the impulses “raw” and not providing a processed, warmer alternative that sounds closer to the vintage records. On the other hand, I’ve heard from good authority that the IRs they did include are an accurate depiction, and it really does sound that “bright/ringing” before it travels through a couple or more generations of tape and gear.

If you've heard the (admittedly bad copy, like 80th generation) Beatle multitracks, you can hear that the Abbey Road chamber is indeed pretty bright. That said, I've never used the plugin.

It's very good and my favourite .... until I got the UAD Capital Chambers now it never seems to get used.

I use it once in a blue moon. There's a Ryan Earnhardt video where I thought it sounded as good or better than his real "chamber" he set up for the video. I was impressed so I bought it.

After a year or two, if you need the newest version of the plug-in you bought (like if you’ve got a newer version of your DAW or OS), you have to pay a fee to get it. Anywhere from like $50 to $200. I haven’t looked in a while. The whole operation became such a damned nuisance I just stopped considering Waves plug-ins as viable options. You buy something for $39 and then 18 months later it stops working and it’ll cost you like $100 to make it work again. No thanks.

I’m using the latest version of Pro Tools and I have Waves plugins that’s are V9 (in other words, old) and they all work fine without updating the WUP.

I’m using the latest version of Pro Tools and I have Waves plugins that’s are V9 (in other words, old) and they all work fine without updating the WUP. The main reason for upgrading is that if you go to a newer Mac OS and need to install the Waves plugins, you can't with the latest Waves Central. For a while, Waves had the legacy installer available (Wave Central L). Using it was not for the faint of heart, and I think they jettisoned it. I did get it to work, on a 2019 Mac Pro with Catalina, but it was a pita. But then a certain DAW I use broke it on an update, at least on retina displays. Some of the plugs (ones that supported retina) had quarter-size graphics, but you still needed to click where the control "should be". BTW, I was also irked at Waves because a few of my plugins—most of the ones I cared about—could have been upgraded to 10 or 11 during the support period, which had lapsed by the time I needed to. Not only did Waves never warn or suggest to do the upgrade within the support period, they announced end of support during that time while ensuring users v9 plugins would continue to work just fine going forward. They seem to have since deleted that language from their site since. Ultimately, I caved and paid for the renewal. While Waves plugins aren't crucial to me, it definitely simplifies things when opening up old projects that I might have a plugin here and there. And they do cap the total cost, so if you have a lot of them it might not cost much more than renewing just your favorites.

WUP mainly seems to affect Mac users, it seems. Windows people seem to be able to use very old Waves revisions just fine. Although Windows 11 is on the horizon (?)

I have these and they’re very useful chamber IR captures, especially Chamber 1. The provenance is questionable given that many historic studios do not permit their chambers and plates to be captured without authorization. If I’m not going “pure” IR, Seventh Heaven’s Sunset Chamber is hard to beat given the control over decay time. It’s technically an IR as well, I know, but it doesn’t sound like one. Fun story: Casey based the preset off of the sound of Jim Morrison’s vocals on the first Doors album recorded at Sunset Studios, but all of Bruce Botnick’s comments indicate that reverb was actually a plate. The version that circulates as an isolated track is stranger still, because the stereo reverb (the original was mono and printed to the 4 track) indicates that it’s additional digital-era verb on top of the original, added for the modern remixes. After that, Nimbus. After that? Sunset Studio Reverb, then the Valhalla Plate chamber algos. If that doesn't work, a chamber is probably not the right fit 😅
