Well, I do have the two large book cases. Should I swap a couple of these absorption panels for diffuser panels? Book cases at the back of the room are GENIUS! Follow the grid pattern of a diffusor build plan by arranging books in the (something like) 11323112132121313 etc pattern...according to size. They break up and absorb stray unwanted spatter. An overhead fractal diffusor can make your 7' ceiling sound like 12' Book cases can work as great diffusers BUT trying to find books that can be arranged as diffusers is getting harder and harder to find. If you have a table saw and a dado blade set you can try to cut a backing block but widths can be a bitch. You also want to make sure the book cases are really really solid ( how many times have you heard an LF buzz and found it’s a shakey shelf).

Tube traps ALL the way. They are miracles for small rooms. If you buy the ones with adjustable stands (ASC calls these "Studio Traps"), you can use them in a QSF configuration around the singer/mic for recording, and then move them around your mix position for monitoring. Get 8 - 10 of them and never worry about room acoustics again. You could also go nuts and do the whole Attack Wall thing, but for most people, that's probably exorbitantly cost-prohibitive. As far as panels go, I would never spend money on commercial stuff when I can make equally effective panels for a fraction of the cost. You don't have to be handy, either — I absolutely SUCK with most DIY stuff. You don't even have to build frames! Just buy a box of rigid insulation panels (i.e. Rockboard or OC703), wrap them in low thread-count bed sheets, and seal them taut with hot fabric glue. Not having a frame makes them WAY more manageable. You can literally just screw some cheap metal brackets in the wall and rest the panels on top of those. Happy to share some photos if you want. Hi, tkaitkai.... I'd be totally interested in photos of what you describe. Thanks! -09

I just want to make sure I'm understanding this.

Hi, tkaitkai.... I'd be totally interested in photos of what you describe. Thanks! -09 Hey friend, sorry for taking so long to get back to ya. Here are some photos. My place is a little disorderly at the moment, so please excuse the mess. I almost always record vocals with 8 - 10 tube traps in an evenly-spaced semicircle around the mic (what ASC has calls a 'Quick Sound Field') as seen here: I have a "cloud" above the recording position with 2 of the cheap DIY panels I mentioned. Basically just rigid Rockboard 80 panels (3" thick, 4' x 2') wrapped in $5 bed sheets, literally just resting on cheap metal brackets (4 per panel) that I bought from Home Depot & spray-painted black: When I want to mount the panels on mic stands as I described, it looks like this: Not the sturdiest or most sightly contraption, but they get the job done for dirt cheap. If you're concerned, you could always use bungee cords or velcro or something to better secure them in place.

If you have a table saw, tracksaw or miter saw diffusion are a simple but boring and repetitive build. Their are 2 secrets 1. find a source of scrap lumber, your local lumber supplier will love you if you come in search of scraps and a mixture of different woods can give a really cool look. 2 build a jig that is the inverse of what the calculator gives you, makes layout a no brained. bonus tip: diffusion gets heavy quickly, but if you have a drill press you can drill out most of each piece. Just set the stop so you leave a 1/2 in or so. and Clamps, clamps clamps. With 3 clamps you can build 3 rows glue them up and then glue the rows together. I like building rows of 36in with a 1/4 in plywood backer. I will glue and use a bard nailer to attach the backer and 36in means I have a center attachment point where I know I’m going to have at least one row of screws get a solid bite into the overhead beams. I have also seen builds where the diffusion blocks are set between the beams with some insulation behind them to maximize height.

Well, it's finally happening. The GIK panels have arrived. My wife and I decided to refresh the whole space, so we pulled all the shelving from the wall, moved a few racks out of the room, moved bookcases, moved out furniture and are now prepped to repaint the room. Once that's done the new panels will get hung and we'll get to hear how big a difference they actually make. I am very optimistic.
I'm also waiting on my new Dangerfox Genesis 24 desk, which should arrive in two weeks. This whole upgrade is so exciting. By the end of the month everything should be up and running again. I'll keep everyone posted.

I can't imagine you sounding any better, but man, I can't wait! Good rooms can make a nice difference; more clarity; less mud, less tinny sound. Hoping the rooms starts to skew that way.

Looking good! Love the lights, can't wait to see the desk. And in your next video you need to incorporate that punching bag.

Looking good! Love the lights, can't wait to see the desk. And in your next video you need to incorporate that punching bag. Ha ha. I stink or am at best average at most sports. I was the kid who liked to sing and dance, so I got picked on a bit. What people didn't realize is my grandfather and dad were both boxers. So I learned to box as a kid. Used to surprise the heck out of the bullies. Then I got into Karate in college and eventually just settled into kick boxing training to help keep my weight under control. I turned out to be pretty good, although I never got into competing.

The desk is here. Holy crap it's heavy. My brother is coming over tonight to help me get it down to the studio. Also received the remainder of my panels from GIK. So, things will take shape soon.
