Bump - I’m curious too
I am strongly considering moving to apollo to save time doing more ITB, but I will keep outboard pres and a few channels. I need two channels if I do this. Shelford channel and bae 1028 are my contenders. I’d prefer to have two of the same I think

Have never used a 1028, but I got a pair of BAE 1073D's a few months ago and they were beyond what I had hoped for. Getting amazing sounds with these, especially on all of the sources you mentioned. I've had and used several Neve inspired pres and these are by far my favorite. Can only imagine that the added frequency points and LPF make the 1028 even better - it's my dream to eventually get a pair.
Not sure if you were talking about the Shelford channel with the comp or the Shelford input module (5052), but either way, the 1028 EQ has a lot more going on as far as frequency selection. But if you were talking about the Shelford Channel, you'll get a compressor as well for about the same price.

I have a Shelford here. It doesn't sound like my 1066, so if you're after a "vintage Neve sound", buy an old Neve.... It's a good sounding preamp though. Colored sound, but wide bandwidth/modern. Very good sounding DI (maybe my best?). The eq is ok, highs can be a bit sharp, and I would prefer the mids be wider. The comp... I'm not a fan of fixed settings.
It's a good preamps, but I thought I would give you a real review instead of the "honeymoon reviews" you usually see.
Want a great preamp cheap? Get an AEA TRP. It's fantastic, especially on tube mics.

I owned a Shelford channel for a bit and worked out of a room for about 5 years that had 2x BAE 1028s.
One of the 1028s sounded fantastic and was very reminiscent of the Neve console in the other room. The other one never sounded quite as good and I was not the only one to notice it... had a harsh top end. It could have had something wrong, but that was my experience.
The RND pre is excellent and I loved the low band on the EQ, but found the top band to be harsh and the curves on the mid band to be a little too tight for my liking. It sounds a lot more modern, IMO, than a 10 series Neve. The compressor in it was fine... the time constants were always a bit odd to me, but it sounded decent. Whatever I liked the Shelford on, I like my Avedis MA5 a little better, FWIW.

The Heritage EQ even more so.... and its excellent! Modular construction on the inside, too, like an actual Neve.

I realize this may not be an apples-to-apples comparison, but I have a few BAE units (1073s, 66, 23) and I’ve been extremely happy with my two AML 1084-500 units. Should I ever need to jettison the BAEs (the horror!!) I would really consider getting a bunch of the AMLs to “replace” the BAEs.
No direct experience with the actual Neve offerings, but, pound for pound (or literally £ for £), a self-assembled AML 1084 cannot be beat.

I had always been curious about the AML 1073 but decided against it because it didn't have an output trim - does the 1084 have one?

Yes, and it’s an actual knob you can turn with your fingers and not the tiny screwdriver thing. The modules I’m using are the full EQ-equipped 2-slot 500 series models.

I would not hesitate to go with BAE. I am not going to argue which is closest to the neve sound you are after, they are probably all close enough to be i the ball park. I have a couple of BAE 1073 pre only and they have a really nice low end going for them. These pre’s are ridiculously good and they will stand the time and trends passing. Most of the time I track all my vocals, guitars, bass, acoustics and what not with them. I mix i the box and use for example arturia’s pre73 eq then to continue with the line of character. I wouldn’t mind having the lpf version if the wallet would have agreed with my vision at the time. But I manage well without.

This has got me thinking about putting 4 of those bad boys in an 8 Space rack. Would be less than half the price of a pair of BAE 1028s. I really love the Neve flavor and am trying to slowly build up my rig to the point that I can mic up an entire drum kit (and eventually a whole band) with Neve pres with EQ. I checked out the AML and I really love how they put in a separate card for the line input. I REALLY wish BAE had done that with the 1073D. Using it line in is a bit of a hassle the way I have my patchbay set up.
