I had seen something about these a while back but it seems they are in production now.
I have pictures of all the rest of it and it is, as much as all the other clones, an exact copy except for their logo on the body and transformer.

Wild! I bet replacing the capsule with a CT12 would make one of these sound fairly decent. Where are the mics sold, Tim?

I guess this is going for a stupidly cheap price? I can't tell if you're saying this is a bargain or complete copycat junk that we should stay away from?

Well it isn't junk. It is as well made as others that people drool over here. I think the price is about what an Upton costs so not cheap but not outrageous. I think it is currently only sold in China and it has a chinese capsule.

Googling Panther Tube Microphone with Images results two other unsurprising microphones though.

There are lots of microphones in china that you can't get links to. I have seen these

Have you heard them? Do they require a new capsule? If the cost is the same as an Upton & one needs to change the capsule (CT?) then it comes out to time consuming & extra money of course. Will the "new" capsule be compatible?

I haven't heard them but except for the capsule they use all the right parts. Since every other replica costs more (the Upton has none of the internal mechanical parts of a 251) the additional cost of a capsule would be 400-450 bucks.
You could just forget about all this window dressing and just get one of the clones that is only electronically the same but much cheaper.

Interesting. What do you mean by internal mechanical parts?

Or order the studio 939 build and a tim cap and be happy ! Slight veer off-topic: is studio 939 still around? I ordered something last year and never got it or any confirmation of an order - I was charged because it was PayPal but I got them to refund me. I wanted to re-order maybe 6 months ago so I sent an email to an address I found and through their site and never got a response to either.

Nice body for DIY. Does anyone know which factory they come out of? Similar to the U87 clone that's floating around.

I see Chung up on other sites from time to time but not certain about 939 being up wax hoping it was just a supply problem.

Interesting. What do you mean by internal mechanical parts? The innards aren’t the same…more diy. But the capsule sounds really great.

I was skeptical, but perhaps due to "Covid purchase syndrome," I acquired a Northfield mandolin with Chinese production involved, and it equals many mandolins manufactured in the U.S. There are obviously great crafts people and many other great people in China making items. As to this microphone, it would be interesting to put it through the standard paces to check it out.

Off topic completely... but I had a Northfield Big Mon mandolin for years before I got my Gibson Fern. Very well made mandolins. Absolutely world class fit and finish. I don't think because something is made in China that it is bad. There are good and bad products coming out of every country. Chinese manufacturing obviously has the ability to make super high quality products. It's a bit odd that they have chosen (in most cases of microphones) to go with mass quantity over quality. It has to be hard to hit these ridiculous price points. I just feel bad for the people being paid so little to make all the stuff we consume. But that's another story.

Certainly, anyone who deals with China, does so at their own risk. It is different, however, in dealing with Northfield (mandolins), and other entities in the U.S. and elsewhere that have components made in China, as those other entities outside of China are the ones offering warranties and responsibility. It is always good to know who is going to be responsible for gear if it is not delivered, is faulty, needs service, etc. And it is not good when that responsibility is controlled by China (and some other countries).
