For grins, I tried replacing my outboard comp with VBC - ya, cause others say they are doing it. That did NOT work for me. Since I bought it and following that test, I use it for different track duties. I really like the Red on Acoustic.
Tonight, while working on a previous posted (here) mix, I put the Red after the outboard comp and bam - found something cool. My outboard is running 3-5db which is a bit more than I would expect but it works. The last thing I expected to work was 1-2db additional compression but, the character of that plug works really well in series. I tried using only one or the other and it simply does not compare.
Anyone else supplementing 2buss compression with VBC? Having any fun with it?

Mostly for the subtle tone enhancement each comp provides. Maybe a db of compression but usually not compressing at all. Like you say just using the character of each comp to enhance. They're good sounding compressors to be sure, actually the best itb comps I've heard, but I find myself still liking my hardware better.

I literally just picked these up - like three days ago or whenever his last sale ended(does anybody buy Slate's stuff at regular price - it seems to go on sale every other month) so I haven't really had a chance to play with it yet. Had basically heard that the Red is pretty close to the real deal. Plus I didn't have anything that purports to be a vari-mu flavor, so for a hundred bucks?
Am interested to hear what others are using them on.
Will try and remember to try it after my outboard comp.
Cheers, Geoff

Is there a difference putting the VBC before the hardware comp? I would imagine that is how I would try it first..........

Put VBC on the 2-Bus last night for the first time (couldn't refuse the $99 offer), and just messed around with it trying some of the presets. Shut off the Fairchild emulation in favor of the UAD 670, so tested G/Red/670, all lightly smooched at 1db or so of GR (or none). My initial reaction was, "too much" (duh) with them all active, and the make-up settings pushed the gain up a bit. Rotated them in/out to informally evaluate the difference, and liked them all. The main thing I noticed is that they all include noise modeling (hiss), and it is noticeable to me compared to the dead-silent Fabfilter stuff.
Not sure which way to go, and it's a good thing.

The reason I put it last is that I really enjoy my HWC and was just investigating some icing to put on the cake. Just the right flavor for me -> Daking Comp -> VBC/Red

Just using Red mostly on the mix buss. Really like it, reminds me of my old hardware bus comp.

I just finished a few mixes with Red on every bus, mixing in to it. Supplemented with some hardware Maag eq4. I love that red. It's great at low ratio and 1-2 db reduction. I haven't hit it much harder than that but I love it there. I used the whole rack, Mu in to gray, in to red on a mix a few weeks ago. Barely tickling the meters and varied attack, release and hi pass settings. Pretty sweet.

There's a whole lot of saturation in the big rack. I should figure out how to use it instead of ignoring it. When I first got VBC,the rack seemed way over the top and I was dialing in the comps at around 10-20% wet and it still seemed too much!!

My (probably wishfull thinking) feeling about the rack on this mix was... Mu for a bit of slower envelope tweaking thickening, gray for that snare drum and general transient shaping smack some of us love and red for the drive/distortion and barely barely moving the meter. This was on a return AFTER external summing on a massive AWTAC summing set up. My assistant and I take a lot of pains to volume match so we can really tell if we like 2 bus treatments and there was something great about the VBC that wasn't there without it. Now I know I could have used a number of my other stereo comps to get a great sound but they were already working! Also the ability to a/b small tweaks to the bus compressors is really valuable to us. All that said...this week I clobbered a few mixes with L316 AND L2. EDM based pop...No subtlety allowed. Trie VBC on the 2 but not quite right. That's what it took to get it rocking.

I love VBC. I use instead of my desk comp 90 percent of the time.

Alright, I'm slapping the whole rack on the mix buss ( right now it just has the Red ) then continuing on with the mix from there. Let's see how this puppy operates!;-) As far as level matching there have been some rally cool plugs released for Reaper that really help with level matching.

Didn't like what the Mu was doing to the low end on this track, even blended in in small amounts.
