What are you listening for, and how often do you refer to them?
Gotta admit I'd gotten out of the habit of going to reference cds and I think it's a habit I should get back to.
I'll also say I didn't really have a set bunch of things I'd refer to - more along the lines of "oh this is kinda like something by so and so" and then I'd pull out a cd by them. For hard rock Marshall rhythm stuff though, I d kinda always gravitate to Malcolm Young tones (get well!).
Cheers, Geoff

That's the way I do it...try to think what I'm mixes reminds me of and then go get the best example I can think of. I really thought "Cop Car" sounded great on the Keith Urban record...been using that a little bit...Also, can't go long listening to Fleetwood Mac Rumours. Of course, rolled off on the bottom and very top...but just killer punch.

Also, can't go long listening to Fleetwood Mac Rumours. Of course, rolled off on the bottom and very top...but just killer punch. Considering how long it took them to make it, that record is so spare for the most part. Some of those songs there is hardly anything going on instrumentally. Killer rhythm section, great vocals, a couple guitar parts (Buckingham definitely has a very distinctive style and tone too) and some keys - along with great songs - shows that's all you need. I'd find that one hard to use as a reference though - to me it's very much its own thing. I've owned it on lp, 8 track tape (really!) and cd (twice). Have been listening ti to it a lot lately. Cheers, Geoff

Pretty much the same as everyone else. I go on fleabay and buy a few cheap CDs of whatever I think the band I'm recording wants, or should sound like. I've actually come across some bands that everybody seems to hate on but are actually very good this way.

I'm always amazed by the record how close they get to offending frequencies but don't cross the line.... that record definitely comes right up to the threshold... it's amazing how they do that. The depth and space is amazing too. Great record.

Here from the getgo I first use references that a client wanted to refer to, that is if they had any. If not whatever I pick up from the songs that might be relative to existing music, I MIGHT look for similar said music, although I tend to avoid it because it might steer you away from a good idea/ sound direction that you might have had. What works best for me is using songs in the same genre, but not necessarily the same energy/tempo/sound/mood. Also I prefer listening to references more prior to mixing than during. And listening to shorter sections of different songs in rapid succession to form an idea of bright/dark, open/tight etc..sounds a bit vague maybe but I honestly don't do a lot of referencing, hope it helps ,regards Nico

I import a reference song into the Pro Tools session and bring the level down to what I'm mixing at so I can A/B my mix with the reference . I go back and forth alot . Checking the levels mainly , how loud is the vocal , kick , snare , cymbals , guitars......also the type of automation they are doing , turning up cymbal hits...check the low end....

DP Machine Head, DL Hysteria, Jellyfish Spilt Milk. Just to set up positioning, perspective and subwoofer level (not always on, but when it is so I'm not overdoing it).
Bear in mind, one is listening to MASTERED versions in a mix session.

Saw this on a Pensado ITL: Sample Magic A/BIf you're big on in-session reference mixes, this plugin might be pretty useful. It's got some cool features, for around $50 USD.
