Anybody played or own one of these? I've been looking at maybe picking up a 12 string one of these days, and the 59X12 is maybe going on my shortlist.

I got a normal DC-12 like 15 years ago. Its a Dano - has the sound that you know, but it’s just a total piece of junk. And that’s kinda cool.
Sometimes I string it up as just a 6 and play slide on it. Sometime just double the G and B strings and it’s a cool layer without being overbearing. You can also do the double G and B and only use the Hi octave strings for the EAD’s.
The cheap 12’s open up lots of avenues, which makes it inspiring. Don’t count on the feel or playability of it to be inspiring though.

I have one strung up with a set of flatwounds. Sounds pretty cool. Ever compared it to a Ric? I dont have a ric to compare it too. I like how Rics sound but cant stand those tiny necks. I have a 60s epi Riviera 12st with flats on it. The dano is more sparkly cleaner With the lipsticks. The Rivi is grindier Mid forward with the mini himbuckers.

i have a 59 jimmy page 6string and a rickenbacker. they do sound nothing a like. the dano will always sound „cheaper“ but also ... „cooler“. if you can understand. the ric will always have that classic worthy jangle. both are niche sounds, both are great. http://instagram.com/p/CI-34x5M5Mo

I had a Dano 12 forever until I tracked down a Rickenbacker 450/12 I could justify. The Dano doesn’t have the same jangle…and that particular Ric is interesting because when you play away from the bridge it almost goes back to sounding like a 6 string, which makes it pretty versatile for me.
But, for the money, the Dano’s do the job. I always thought the old Coronado 12 strings did a cool, plunky thing as well. The 12 string Stratocasters are nice and covered a lot of sounds. I wish they were more common/readily available. Never played a Gretsch 12.

A couple weeks ago I recorded a Gretsch Electromatic 12 string, can't remember the exact model, not super expensive but not super cheap either and it sounded horrible. One of the worst sounding guitars I've ever heard. The guitarist ordered some TV Jones to put in it, we'll see if they sound better. I tried it into 3 different amps and it just sounded small, harsh and cheap and not in a fun lo-fi way, it was BAD. I was surprised because I gigged on a Gretsch Electromatic 5420 for a couple of years and it was actually a really nice sounding and playing guitar.

I bet the TV Jones would help.
