I’m just proficient on guitar - never really venture much past the fifth fret chordally, because it was always a guessing game…i recognized patterns of course, but never put everything together…but holy shit did this unlock things for me. I’m sure - like he says - this is rudimentary stuff for most guitar players - but for whatever reason, I’d never gotten it.
Really good, and simple, explanation! Makes me want to practice a bit today.
When I was in college they tried to get me to learn 4 string inversions with a bunch of extended chord tones. I think that was useful, and I did grow from it. But this is a little easier to stomach for popular music.

I had a session this week and had Troy Lancaster on guitar. We were talking and he brought Tom up out of the blue - mentioned he was working with him a lot more. Anyway - we’re talking about all of this and how he was in awe of the guy. Just the way he thinks. And Troy has been on every freaking record in town for the last 15 years.
