Increasingly I find myself with gear that has big chunky 10 ton power supplies. Not warts or in-line thingies (which are light enough to strap to the side of the rack), but the big metal babies. Where do you keep them? Behind the rack on the floor? I thought maybe I could put in a shelf or something? Power runs down the left side of my racks and placement of these things on the floor starts to make everything messy and I’m terrified to get an audio cable anywhere near them. Interested to hear about your set up or solutions

That’s kinda where I was leaning but the shelves will need to be short and/or custom and it potentially gets these things pretty close to audio lines

I've found proximity to other pieces of gear to be more problematic than proximity to audio cabling. Personally I place mine on the floor - OUTSIDE - the rack.

The problem is you simply don’t know what will work till you try it. For the most part cables are not the problem but the design of everything in the rack can be. I think Penn Elcom has some short rack shelves, but I have also taken a cut off saw to others to make them work.

When I was on staff at Overdub Lane, Wes Lachot kept the power supply to the console in the “attic” space above the control room. Guess who had to climb way the hell up there, drag it out, and lower it down the ladder when the supply went down. Lowest man on the totem pole. (That was me.) It was heavy.

I've found proximity to other pieces of gear to be more problematic than proximity to audio cabling. Personally I place mine on the floor - OUTSIDE - the rack. I do the same - all the power supplies and distribution boards on the floor behind the gear (so they aren't visible), but then I lifted up all my audio cables and clipped them collectively (cable clips and velcro cable ties) a couple of feet above the floor, so they never come anywhere near the mains and PSU cables. Works well for me! Martin

I wound up going the floor route, big stack of them behind the racks, the audio cables pass back n forth a few feet above about mid-rack. So far, so good, been running the new setup for a few weeks and so far it’s extremely quiet. Really appreciate all the tips!
