Narrowing down input transformers on my tube preamp. Since you guys listen more intently than most, y'all wanna help listen? You know the drill. There are four blind samples. I'll reveal once enough people have chimed in. All were recorded just a moment ago. Neumann U47 --> preamp --> Metric Halo Lio8 @24/96k. No compression or effects. Thanks in advance! NOTE: For a control, one of the samples is not my preamp. FILES: Professor Dan, Input Transformer Samples

I'm glad you included both the soloed vocal and another with music.
I was torn between samples 2 and 3 when just listening to the soloed vocal, but with the accompanying music I thought Sample 3 took the win.
Sample 2 was also great, but the lack of any resonance in the high mids on Sample 3 made it sit better with the music I thought. Amazing balance of lows, mids, highs and intelligibility.
Wow, what a mic! I feel like #3 lets all of the nuance of the u47 come through.

I like 2 the best. Seems to sound the most musical to me. 1 sounded a bit pointy to my ears. 3 had the most saturation I thought, but might get hairy if you’re stacking stuff. 4 was cool too, but not as pleasing as 2. 2 just feels really natural and easy to listen to. Curious as to what’s what!

First of all, excellent shootout here. The vocal is spectacular (pretty rare on shoot-outs), and the solo plus in-the-mix, I mean….this is the standard by which to measure all shoot-outs, everyone take heed! 2 takes the cake. 3 is too hairy for me. 2 has a smoothness in the upper mids and just a really pleasant and “vintage” focus. I’d guess 1 is not your preamp as that sounds the most sterile to me, we’ll see how much I know hahaha…I’m looking forward to the reveal that they’re all actually identical

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Not sure how many more folks will chime in, so here are the results:
Sample 1 = tube preamp with Crimson A-10 input transformer, with Zobel on secondary Sample 2 = tube preamp with Crimson A-10 input transformer, no Zobel on secondary (has a 2dB "ring" around 20kHz) Sample 3 = tube preamp with Cinemag CMMI-10 input transformer Sample 4 = Seventh Circle Audio C84 (Millennia-style preamp)

Thanks for the reveal..
After listening on different headphones and monitors I now have an even stronger preference for Sample #3 = Cinemag
In fact I'm interested in buying one of these preamps from you with the CMMI-10 input transformer, but I have a couple of questions. I'll PM you

I'm still a little ways from selling them. My "real" job at the university has been keeping me on my toes.

I voted for 2 but I was really close to voting for 3. It was easy for me to eliminate 1 and 4. I thought 2 was more even sounding - especially on the vocal, whereas I felt there were certain words that kind of poked out on #3

In my opinion: 1 & 4 sound cheaper. 2 is fuller but I wonder if it is a little louder. 3 is my pick, more balanced.

3 to me is the best choice in a new preamp, matched perfectly with the backing tracks like they all used the same pre. I really liked 1, there’s some weird resonant thing that the louder I listen, the more I enjoy it. It doesn’t match into the backing track, but for rock/pop might be awesome? It would be hard to imagine spending a ton of money for that tone though, seems not very flexible. As a button press add on feature maybe?

I don’t like the idea of needing a Zobel network to get rid of a ring. How about making the transformer without the ring.

Talented in multiple ways as always Dan. FWIW - I agree with Nick's comments above finding #2 more musical, natural and easy/more enjoyable to listen to,... #2 led me to listen to the song and performance more quickly than some of the other's I was hearing and analyzing longer with audio engineer ears. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!
