I know it won’t get as much traffic over here in OT but didn’t want to clog the Pro Audio forum with this.
I just finished reading the book on making the Rumours LP by Ken Caillet. He was one of the engineers at first and then was hired on to actually help coproduce and mix it. Anyway I gave the album a good listen from start to finish earlier today. I have always been more of a pre Buckingham/Nicks Mac guy. However, this album is outstanding in all of its production and mixing. If a sound is on it, it has its own space and purpose. Also, while he may be one of the biggest douches in rock history, Lindsey Buckingham is one hell of a guitar player.
I know this LP has been talked about a lot but I thoroughly enjoyed giving it a nice critical listen.

Now go back and listen on a different system, Rumours is one of those albums where you will find something new in the mix on a different system and how I justify all the different speakers to the wife. You don’t truly appreciate what Lindsey brought to the band till you see them live without him then 3 weeks later his solo show. In every band there is somebody who functions as music director. In Fleetwood Mac it was LB ! I am as much a Neil Finn fan as I am a Lindsey fan, but even on Christy or Stevie songs the Big Mac sounded like a lounge act doing lazy covers. Stevie was winded after every twirl, you wouldn’t have noticed except she had to stamp her voice everywhere ( Ironically they didn’t do Everywhere). 3 weeks later LB sounded like the real thing.
Oh my Father’s Day present 3rd row for Lindsey’s show this fall we will see how he sounds post heart surgery and divorce. I am courious to see if like most his vocal range dropped post intubation or like me it expanded ( yeah I know I have to different).

Yeah I was telling one of my collaborators about giving this LP a good critical listen and talking about Lindsey Buckingham with him. He said “well consider that when they fired him before the current tour, they hired Neil Finn AND Mike Campbell to replace him.”

I remember seeing Fleetwood Mac at the Universal Amphitheater for their Rumors tour.
It was the original line up and they played the entire Rumors album.
The outdoor Amphitheater had great acoustics so they played and sounded like the album. Their encore song was TUSK.
I Then again, some years back, saw them at the new LA Forum, original line up. They played great.
The acoustics were terrible, with all the high end trash bouncing around the arena.
The only saving grace were my earplugs and the $250.00 apiece, third row, center, on the floor seats, that were given to me.
Both times Linsey was with them. He was an important part of the sound.

I salute Bob Welch for paving the way for Lindsay Buckingham.
Buckingham embodied absolutely everything of note in Fleetwood Mac.
He is irreplaceable

We were talking Fleetwood Mac this weekend after binging the White Album- Say You Will. I think the one thing we all really miss here is that as far as a “ Pop sound “ it really wasn’t Lindsey or Stevie who really seamed to embrace it, yeah Stevie had the whole Welsch Witch thing, but it was really Christy who suddenly with the addition of Stevie and Lindsey, brought all these pop songs and the Lead Singles for both White album and Rumors. Some how Lindsey brought out the pop Diva in Christine and that shows his true magic as a producer. It’s just to bad he developed the rep as hard to work with because I can only imagine what he could with other acts.

Just before this album was done, my girlfriend at the time was doing a BV session. The producer had worked with CS&N, and was heading to work with Fleetwood Mac. Around 1981/1982 I was close to a record deal then, but I gave him my demo, just in case. One song was called Take Me Home.
A year or two later I heard Stevie Nicks' song Stand Back. There's a coda at the end with a line "take me home". It's the exact melody of my song, note for note. I thought of suing, but at that time didn't want a rep as a litigious guy when shopping for a deal.

Had a song on hold with a manager of a hot country band for a year. She kept telling me (mostly my publisher) they loved the song. Kept making it round after round. Then of course it lost steam and the didn’t record it. They release the record and the album is literally the title of my song they held for a year. They wrote a song with that title - and admittedly there have been other songs with that one word title - and it was completely different from the song I wrote. My guess is that they loved the title, heard the song enough to say they liked it and then it subconsciously came out in a writing session with other (real) songwriters. (Two big writers in town that I respect) It is what it is. My song is ten times better than the drivel they put on the album. And I’ll be glad to share the two privately for anyone that wants to make their own judgement. Was it on purpose? Maybe not. Does it suck. Absolutely. That being said - I’ve heard much worse stories than that.

Just wanted to add that the original Tusk vinyl pressing sounds soooo good, and every other version I’ve heard just sounds wrong to me.
Also: I think Tusk has the best LB ideas on it. I love hearing artists try new things and don’t mind if they whiff sometimes. Any McCartney 2 fans?
