Its a bit different if you are using a dedicated ADAT interface like an RME and ADAT converters because they provide enough ADAT IO for the sample rate IO limitations to be seamless. Most general audio interfaces do not.

You cannot get 32 ADAT ins and out at 88 or 96 with the digiface. You can only get 16. And if go higher than 96, you will only get 8. From the manual:
“The Digiface USB ADAT optical interface offers sample rates of up to 192 kHz. For this to work single-channel data is spread to two or four ADAT channels using the Sample Multiplexing tech- nique. Therefore the number of channels is reduced to 16 or 8 respectively.”
