I’m very curious about the new Avid DAD converters. I know they have to sound amazing, along with Aurora N, Apogee Symphony II, Dangerous Music Convert.

What’s the better path here, adding a high end AD/DA to a Motu 828es/16a combo, or swapping it all out for an Aurora (n) 16?

I have never used motu but had m- box, rme, apollo (all three) and bla mod, b2 AD, 2192, symphony mkii and now Aurora N, the converter wars ended for me with the N.
They have a demo service on their website maybe try one: then you’ll know ?

I’ve got an Aurora 32 (n) coming in today. I’ve used one a couple times and it’s been flawless, and with the latest Pro Tools update it sounds like HD Native is a thing of the past…so figured it was time to get out of the business.

Did you manage to get any sort of deal on the 32 N? Looking at one myself.

You using any external AD/DA for monitoring or printing? At home I monitor through a Drawmer MC2.1, analog out of 1 & 2. I have outboard hooked up through the other line in and outs and use them as hardware inserts in Pro Tools so recall is easy. Eventually I'll finish my little Auditronics console and use that. I've thought about getting a simpler monitor controller but the Drawmer has been working well.

But my Bricasti and two sets of monitors eat up my DA. I picked up an old Coleman M3 monitor controller for cheap. Considering adding an AES card for the Bricasti and a Dangerous Convert for DA. But it’d be hella cheaper to just get another 8 channel I/O card. I dunno.

The DA on the lynx is supposed to be superb, what would the dangerous convert offer you? Also, how much is the 8 channel I/o card? Are you able to upgrade 16 to 32 analog? I’m saving for a 32n but if 16 has the capability to go to 32 in analog I/o I may start there.

The N is modular so you can have 8,16,24,32, you pick on its website.
One wrinkle is that to upgrade later Lynx may want you to to send your unit to them for them to instal. They pay for shipping back.

Regarding modularity and installation: I bought my Aurora(n)16 when they were released. It replaced an Aurora 16. My (n) was originally purchased with USB L-Slot. When I bought a new, dedicated music PC, a Creation Station from Sweetwater a few years later, I ordered Thunderbolt. Lynx validated the setup with Sweetwater and I bought a Thunderbolt L-Slot to replace the original USB L-Slot, Lynx said I could install it myself, zero issues, it is bulletproof. I have had minor issues with the ASUS ThunderboltEX3 in the PC, it has to be physically removed and reinserted after a power supply interruption, 3 times and all home contractor related. I need to get a UPS for the PC. I recently made changes to my recording and mixing setup, want to increase my channel count from 16 to 24 and contacted Lynx. You can install additional channel cards, up to 24 count, yourself. If you need 32, you will need to send it to Lynx. The N is modular so you can have 8,16,24,32, you pick on its website. One wrinkle is that to upgrade later Lynx may want you to to send your unit to them for them to instal. They pay for shipping back.

I’m going to try out the N Control for monitoring (going out 1&2 to speakers). Controlling speaker volume with an app isn’t natural for me but it be nice to declutter!

Lynx’s policy varies, I have built mike’s, psu., etc, but when I inquired about installing the 4 mike pre module, I was required to send my unit across the country to do so: drag.
I have had two other in covid shipping fiascos, with equipment disappearing for weeks/months and many problems dealing with the shipper/insurance, so I didn’t buy the Lynx pres: maybe later.
Simple matter to check with Lynx.

Can’t you just use the front panel rotary control ? I don’t know! Haven’t dove in, just plugged it in and made sure it showed up in Pro Tools. Also, it’s in a rack with a bunch of other stuff so not really a quick arm reach away. But that’s good to know

All good, mine is right beside me in a rack, so easily reach able. The GUI pages are pretty configurable too, so hopefully you can set it up as you prefer.

Also, headroom is 20DBFS. I’ve read some complaints that this isn’t ideal for driving HW. Not sure.

I saw that. You can now also set the push rotary function to be a mute?

I think it’d be cheaper to go another 8 analog I/O card. They are around 1100. I wish they would make a main out card. A couple pairs of DA’s and some digital I/O. The AES card is 16 channels. I don’t need 16 AES channels. A pair would be good.

And you get more I/o, I’d definitely go that route if I were you. Seeing as the Lynx is modular I may go for 16 instead of 32 starting out...

I would have to eat up two outputs for my monitoring output on the Aurora N? Correct?

Yes, it doesn’t have dedicated outs like Apollo. Although , personally, I think the headphone outs sound great !
