Not sure if it’s been discussed here before, but does anyone have any experience with this stuff? I’ve been missing the 73 thing on vocals, and I didn’t wanna plop down the cash on some of the higher end offerings. Golden Age seems to spend money on the stuff that makes the tone, but cheap out on things like the power supply. From what I’ve heard in online examples it holds its own very well. The mics look very nice as well.

IMHO if you want a "studio serious" version, go for their deluxe version. Around $500. I've been tempted to get the Gap Jr., but with the Useful Arts Hornet at under $300... That seems some serious competition. If you raise the budget, I think the elephant in the room, is the Daking Mic Pre One. Been listening to a lot of classic Early Elton lately, made on the Trident A Console!  Chris |

We’ll see...I used to have a Heritage DMA73. It was great but it was my only good pre at the time and I got tired of that sound on everything. Now I have a bunch of other pres I really like, but I miss that thing. Hopefully this fills the void! |

I'm one click away from ordering a GA-251.
Every clip I've heard of it (along with their 47) sounds absolutely incredible.
The only GAP gear I have experience with is their LA3A clone, which is cool for what it is, but my understanding is that the Premier stuff is in another league.

I will put my hand up and say i have had and continue to use GAP gear for the last 10 x years.
At the moment, I have only one piece at the moment and its the premier version 73. I have a 4 power supply unit device so i dont think there is anything cheap about this power unit and it does what it is suppose to do quite nicely.
It sits on the desk and is very handy and its my reach for unit when i need a quick preamp.
I did not notice too much difference over the older red dlx and the newer grey premier units in regards to sound quality.
I did have the premier 73 eq model but it i was not diggin it and just wanted the preamp section so I also bought the warm audio wa73eq to get a different 73 style eq. I cant say i am that much in love this the warm audio eq so i will be buying a Vintech x73 some time soon as i have always wanted to check one of those out.
Anyway having the premier 73 now for over 2 x years, its is a rock solid neve sound. It doesnt buzz or have any extra inherent noise. But i did notice that the output fader
On the weekend had a scratchy pot when you went past 3 o’clock which is very rare for me.
Also i like the Gap better then the warm audio 73.

The only GAP gear I have experience with is their LA3A clone, which is cool for what it is, but my understanding is that the Premier stuff is in another league. I heard they were already making a MKii version of the 251.something about refining the capsule. Being a 251 lover, the GAP 251 was always on my radar but i could just never bring myself to pull8ng the trigger on it. so yes please do us a favout and buy it and report back. cheers |

As for a 251 - I encourage anyone to go find the 251 shootout on this site. As far as I know, my link to the session we did is still up. The Steiger’s 251 was ultimately the best sounding mic - just refined and great in all aspects and polar patterns. The Blackbird 251 was really great too. But (maybe I’m the only one) I thought my Upton was very close to Dolly in cardioid. Not as good - but I felt like it came in second. So anyway, all that to say - there is an affordable (in comparison) option available.

Don’t throw good money over bad. I bought the GA-U47 a year ago. I use it as a BD ambience and for rooms. I have 2 Stam U47 to compare with and both sound fantastic. GA-47 is a little darker than Stam. But if you want a fairer test, maybe it should be on vocals, ac guitar or other than drums. But so far I am completely satisfied with both GA47 and Stam47. I have GA 47 as an ambience mic on the clip that I posted here in the thread "Cymbals". |

At least it looks like it is on VK. I think a few places still have the MKI up for a little cheaper, too. But yeah, I’ll definitely report back if I end up getting it! |

I won’t say that they nail what most consider to be the sound of a 47 or 251, but if you ever get to hear samples of the 47 Gene used to design his mic he sure nailed the sound of that mic! Convertible Mics are tricky, you need to get all the tone out of the capsule, you need the amp and transformer to be as transparent as possible. This can lead to over hyped capsules. If you favor another capsule Gene will sell you empty heads ( it’s cheaper than buying a s senator). |

It’s a nice mic. More modern sounding than a u47 from what I can gather. The build quality is very nice. On male vocals I found it to be surprisingly similar to my Gefell umt70. They sound different, but in the same sonic family. Maybe that’s the “capsule” tone I’m hearing. I’m still putting it through it’s paces, I may sell it to buy a Signal Arts u48. But I’ll wait till I’ve had a chance to use it more. The multi patterns are useful and having a more modern sound isn’t a bad thing. |

I was considering a Heritage elite series but I’ve been surprised to read how much love the Premier gets here compared to places like the purple site, and at $500 per channel with easy return to somewhere like Sweetwater, it’s looking pretty attractive compared to the other sub-$1k options. In my case it would be used mainly on vocals and direct instruments. |
