Sold my SCA Chassis that had a N72 in it that I used in my vocal chain. My problem is I am missing it...my VP28 is awesome but is not the same tone. Somebody recommended the Phoenix DRS 1? ?? Any other recommendations in a 500 series module under $1000 for my Baritone/tenor voice???

yes api but it has a tone button which is actually an impedance switch so no not a neve clone but still a very fine sound; maybe you can demo one ? just a suggestion !
I have 2 tonebeasts and am experimenting with switching the op amps, I have hardy 990s in the clean side and i just got some 70's yamaha 80100 for the warmer or more vintage side. I like the versatility of the tb12 but its not a neve.

I assume the N72 is a play on Neve.
I really like my JLM Audio Dual 99NV that is 500 series.
cheers

Cat5 swears by those Seventh Circle press so I'm sure they are the good stuff. Yeah the Warm's are very API ish Ric. Knowing what your voice sounds like, I'd imagine it would sound good but maybe not the first choice. It would depend on the mic as well though. If I were recording you in your natural register, I'd reach for a Neve first like the Heritage. Ideally, if you wanted the absolute best possible for your voice and don't care to sell a kidney, an AMS 1081 is the pre for you. I had a pair for awhile and was stupid enough to let them go. That's the best pre my hand has ever touched, period. If there was ever an amplifier that makes anything it passes sound better, that's the one. It puts that "record" haze on a signal. Just remarkable. BTW, that's the only pre I've ever used were I could actually boost the high mids on my baritone and it still sound good.
I feel bad about even mentioning it though cause they are damn expensive. But I'm telling you man, if you ever try one, it'll be instant audio ecstasy.

Man that sounds fantastic but I'm not quite there yet I might just buy the one shot SCA N72...maybe the vintech 1084??

My 2 cents, I had the SCA rack with N72's and A12's, the A12's sounded great, but no attenuator! (i like my vp28's much better), the N72's were good also...but i'm going to get a pair of these eventually, it's an exact copy of the 1073 pre section with an attenuator on the tail end, you can tell a lot looking at schemo's and parts, it's got the highest quality parts available(three gain stages, grayhill, polystyrene caps etc), this will sound like a real deal neve 1073 pre i believe much more than a 2 stage N72, I say this by virtue of the fact it's identical in design. You can buy it complete or diy and save a ton, also you stay in 500 series and can buy a ton of other flavor 500's instead of being locked into SCA's chassis format. IF you diy, and have a 51x rack, you can build it 51x compliant and save $50 in parts that you dont really need, this guy Dave knows his stuff, he's the same guy that provides the blue face RevA 1176 500. www.thedonclassics.com/nv73.htmlwww.thedonclassics.com/products_diy.html#nv73_diy.html
