Anyone else gone using those old machines for fun? I have a few 16mm and super8 cameras. A Bolex from 1955-1960 is just a marvel to hold and use today, things weren't consumable trash back then, obsolete within two years. They made basically the same camera all the way from 30s to 2000s. The colors and vibe of 16mm film are still impossible to get digitally. I don't know how expesive the film/development was back then but now it certainly stings.
Bolex, Pultec, La-2a, Fender strat... Good stuff.

I’m remembering 1994 money 8mm was $25 and about the same to process, for....2 minutes? 3?

In the 90s a friend of mine worked at a large thrift store and he'd see a dozen 8mm cameras a week donated.
None of us had the money to buy film because even back then it was expensive.

Yeah, I use plugins to simulate 8mm and 16mm effects if a clip warrants it. While it doesn't look the exact same (of course), if I'm using it, I'm trying to make a clip look really different, and plugins certainly achieve that to a competent enough degree for my usage.

I still use the old C-Mount lenses by Wollensak with an adaptor on my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Also got a few lenses off Ebay that are only labeled Kiev. Pretty amazing how good old glass can make digital look. Add some basic color correction and something like FilmConvert and you’re golden. Hybrid setups are what’s up I hate shooting with modern, crystal clear, edge-to-edge, flawless focusing lenses. Barf. Give me the oldies.

I started fumbling around, trying to piece together some stuff for a music video. Last year I filmed my nephews watching a train in 8mm, with the idea to cut from cold present day to a warm vintage past. Sharp and cold 4K drone shot of a train passing below in November, jump cut to 8mm film of kids watching a train in the same spot in july. There's potential here, but cutting a complete music video to look at least semi watchable is a whole another ballgame beyond my skill level.
