I’ve been impressed by a few other of their cheap mics.

They sound pretty nice. I used them at a conference a couple years ago.

I've recommended them to folks and know lots that are pretty happy with them.

I have a stereo pair of the se5 which I **think** the 8s replaced. They aren’t bad. But they are a prime example of what I was talking about in the chat about “settling”. Of corse I was just starting out when I got them so there was no reason to blow my whole gear budget on SDCs. My thoughts in regards to your situation is that you wouldn’t be happy long term. You have a lot more experience than I did then when I got them and I honestly believe you will move on from them so why not get something you are more likely to want to keep.

I have an SE 1A which is the first version of these mics. There have been maybe a dozen revisions and alternate models since then. If you look for the discontinued ones, you can save some money. I was thinking about a pair of SE5. What do you use now, Greg? What's wrong with the SE5? I believe you I'm just curious about details since I was looking at them a little bit, not a lot of feedback on these mics out there, and there's a ton of different models.
The SE1A is kind of bright on top and has a solid bottom, for an SDC, on acoustic guitar. It's sort of a mix-ready modern guitar sound, kind of a tall sound not like a mid focused KM84 or something. More of a pop sound than a vintage sound. It's good for making the guitar large in a busy mix. I haven't really tried it on anything "intimate" yet. I bought it because this blog guy Preservation Sound said they were good, said they were similar to KM184, and only $99 or less sometimes. I can hear that a little bit, I guess, that sort of bright pick attack definition. I'm happy with the mic, it does something useful.
I'd like to hear the newer ones also, but haven't yet. I was using the SE1A for a few months but I put the Oktava back up recently, just to switch it up.

The Gefells were my foray into Great mics.

The inexpensive SE’s are not bad, it’s just for a bit more I can always find something more impressive.

I’ve been impressed by a few other of their cheap mics. I would be happy to ship my pair of sE5s to you to just see what you think. No obligation. Just put them to work so you can see for yourself.

I'm wondering if anyone's had experience with the SE8 since this thread was last posted in. I see the SE8 is true condenser while the other SE SDCs are electret.
