Hey I had a few people asking about a few of my mics I had recently acquired so I did a quick shootout with these 6 x mics. I did this in the office whilst my Son and Wife were working (poor people who had to hear my singing over and over again). So this is in no way scientific.
Anyway instead of sending these off to a lot of people I thought it would be easier just to post in one section. If I know how to post it properly that is.
So if you want suck up 6 x minutes of your life that you will never get back, feel free to listen.
Preamp was WT72 .
Mics were: ADK Zmod 251 Signal Art Electronics 47 Upton 251 Heiserman H47t
Neuman KM84
Soyuz 017 fet
If you feel inclined you can have a guess at what order you think each mic should be and then sometime in the near future I will list which mics were what.

How do you get those sound cloud clips to show up?

Cool comparison. 6 and 1 were definitely my preference — lots of midrange clarity on those two.
They all sound good, though. I could get along with any of 'em.

I’m with tkaitkai - 1 and 6 were nicest. To me they fit best.
I liked 2 the least, too much room or something. 3, 4 and 5 seemed interchangeable to me.

Cool shootout! thanks for doing this.
1 and 6 sound nice, clear and modern and work right away. I liked 6 better though, felt 1 collapsed at times whereas 6 stayed solid and a smoother.
I also liked 3, it had a more laidback vintage thing going though it did seem to completely disappear at times but it also seemed just generally lower in volume so I don't know. The esses were pretty smooth but it really needs to be louder!
Number 2 I didn't care for.
4 and 5 are pretty similar, with a mid push that could work depending on the song, it seems these are going for a similar sound. I think I favor 5 as I feel it's a bit more elegant.
1 and 6 have got to be the 251 clones.

thx for doing this. 1&6 are my picks with 1 being a leader for me. could it be 6 is the km84 and 1 the upton?
are 4&5 the heiserman and the signal arts in that order? i like 4 a lot as well,
2 is not great. maybe the adk? 3 the soyuz??
stabs in the dark lol.

Thank you for doing this!...... I know nothing beats being there to hear them in person since most all internet formats have their own compression/player effect on audio file uploads, but it's still great to hear the differences for us all. I'll be looking forward to hearing your thoughts and preferences from your first hand experience after the reveal!
While your links worked just fine, to answer your question of how to post SC clips, - there is a orange soundcloud button in your post edit window you can click on to add the URL address for each one if you'd like.

6 and 1 in that order. You could live with the others though.

6 and 1 sound like the same "type" maybe the 251 type, not sure, but I'll guess that, they sound great.
3, 4, 5 sound good, maybe some of the 47s in there. if I'm hearing correctly today, 5 sounds like a '47' style to me.
2 was kind of a bit odd for some reason

How do you get those sound cloud clips to show up? You on mobile? If you switch to desktop at the bottom you should see the links. You can switch back. Also, if you put them on soundcloud, you’ll see a SoundCloud icon at the top of the editor. Click on that and enter the link.

I decided to hit replay and make simple notes after listening to each mic, and before reading the thread.
Mic 1. Very finished sound, a slight push in the upper mids, but not too far. I don't know your voice though, so maybe it isn't the mic.
Mic 2. Much bigger low/low mids. Quite pleasing. Might be too much in a dense mix, but I'm sure EQable.
Mic 3. Similar to 2 but muddier. Really subdued top. Probably good on fizzy guitar amps if it can take the volume.
Mic 4. Nice fullness, but a bit of a weird sibilance.
Mic 5. I like the upper mids on this, especially (i assume) with a bit in the low mids.
Mic 6. Nice sound in general, and close to mix ready than some of the others. Similar to #1
ETA: Thanks for doing this and letting us all hear the different mics!

What's so strange is depending on which mic I listen to first, I end up choosing a different one in the end.

I tend to favor "clip 1" in a lot of shootouts generally, probably for the reason you said. Notice that as well. Exactly, your ear gets tuned really quickly to a sound. I usually judge the mics from the first lyric, which is probably not the right way, but my mind is usually made up really fast. Like I thought the Heiserman had a really weird resonance in that first sentence and I immediately dismissed it. But then if I start listening to all the clips from the middle of the song, I find the Heiserman sounds smooth whereas others get a little honky on some words. A couple years back I bought some Emo and radial transformer coupled Mic splitters and it's one of the best investments I've ever made because when I'm comparing preamps, I'm not comparing takes anymore and I can really focus on the subtle differences and some opinions I had were really just because the takes were different. It is more complicated to compare 6 mics at the same time, practically impossible I guess, particularly since they all have a different sweet spots.

Nice Voice - I like the top end and air of #1 and the mid's of #6.
I like them both but Mic #1 would be my first choice,... and for my taste I might move a tad closer to that mic for a little bit more proximity effect to go along with that nice upper mid-top end is my 2 cents.
Nice job and thank you for sharing!

I listened to 4 first. I didn’t like it right away. Sounded like voice too far from the mic and catching resonance from the room or something. Maybe it was different polar pattern or just that mic requires some experimental placement.
2 was next. I liked it fine, reminded me of 414 clarity in lows, so I’ll guess it’s CK12 capsule
Then came 1. Wow! Really good, tight image, smooth from bottom to top. Km84 would not surprise me here.
3,5 were ok but they didn’t compare after hearing 1.
Then I heard 6. Stunning.. I just wanted to keep listening and didn’t want to stop. If this is KM84, then I will be surprised. If it’s not KM84 then it’s maybe the first time a new maker beats Neumann for me.

Maybe it is my work monitors but I didn't really love any of these. 6 was my favorite and I absolutely hated 2 and 5. 1 and 3 are usable. For some reason I'd guess 3 is the KM84.

And here are the results. this was not a very accurately measured shootout. The mics were not held in exact position each time, the voice varied greatly during each track, the volume of each mic was not gain match. IT was just a quick, and I mean very quick throw up of each mic and give it a run. But I appreciate all your guys input and good wishes. Thanks
Upton251 = 1 H47t = 2 KM84 = 3 SAE47 = 4 Soyuz 017 = 5 Zmod251 = 6

Thought 6 was the Soyuz. Is that the FET 47? I actually liked the Soyuz 017. It was not the best one i liked but it provided a nice alternative. its is suppose to fashioned kore after a u67 sound but i have the Non tube soyuz 017. thanks for all your thoughts The Upton did have a GE 6072 NOS 1961 tube in it. Looking forward to trying out a nice vintage Mullard that is on its way over from Todd. I have heard that this tubes does add some more body. Thanks Todd will let you know when it arrives.

And I'll pass the "credit" for the Mullard along to Johnkenn. He recommended that tube to me for the Upton. (It sounds very decent in the ADK Z-251 as well.)
