For all the great reviews out there, there doesn't seem to be much chatter here on the boards and none of my local friends have one. Any of you guys use this thing? It seems like a lot of bang for the buck for a project studio.
Not really in the market to buy, just wondering what the word is on this thing. I know people seem to love the Twin Finity pres... four of those plus ADAT an 1176 (lite) for $2k or so? What's the catch?

can't speak to the converters but i was pretty underwhelmed by the pres. never used the comps. they were fine, but not exciting. i honestly preferred using my syteks
i would def take four capi vp26s and any old interface over one of these.

People love the Capi's. I haven't taken the plunge on the 500 series world yet though. What sort of material were you using the 4-710 on. It's interesting because some people seem to rave about the 710 and the Twin Finity pre (or TF style pre) while others say it's kind of "meh". I'm starting to think the difference here is largely in source material.

i almost exclusively record ugly music - punk, hardcore, metal. loud rock type stuff, generally. at the time, i had a lot of fancier options - chandler germanium, TG2, UA610 and maybe Dakings - so they were not top tier options. I maybe used them here and there on kick and snare just to try em out, but wasn't wowed. the chandler stuff just sounds thick.
i took the 500 series plunge maybe 4 years ago and i now have 15 500 series pres!!! it's a slippery slope! but the capi stuff is well worth the price of admission. i think they're great - especially when you bring cost into the game.
but you can for sure find a 6 slot lindell 500 rack for $250 or so if you're patient. hell, i got my JLM 11 slot rack for $400. i wish i had taken the plunge sooner! such a bummer that my germaniums aren't 500 series, especially considering how many times i've had to send them to chandler for service - those things are big and not light!

I LOVE my 4-710d. Its extremely versatile. Can have lots of character or be more pristine. I didn't want to like it for awhile because I tend to lean more towards esoteric gear- but its just good and functional and actually has 'vibe' if you want it to.

I've always been under the impression that the quality of the rack/box itself is pretty crucial. Is that overrated?

Well I'm borrowing a second hand one for the weekend to do a project so we'll see how it goes. I have a longtime connection that will sell it to me for $1,100 plus lifetime labor for repairs if I like it. I've bought lots of gear from this dude. Kind of seems like it would have to really suck to not pay that price. I'm in the market for an expansion of some type. I was gonna go cheap (like ADA8200 or maybe slightly less cheap like Scarlett or Presonus) and then add some stuff in the future. But this is tempting.

Both of my racks are newer but I also don’t think I have any modules that are particularly power hungry. There is a second power supply I can get for my JLM but I talked to them (might just be one guy?)and they seemed to think it wasnt necessary. I have had zero issues in my now 4ish years in the 500 series game

I've used em a handful of times and like it well enough. Certainly has some character & useful functions. Imo the preamp blend is kinda weird. Sounds better at either extreme of the knob, full tube or full solid state. The compressors are ok. Very basic & not much like an actual 1176 but usable enough for some sources that need a bit of squeeze on the way in. They aren't going to replace anything else in your rack. The real benefit is analog patching, lots of ways to exploit it and great if you have other outboard... inserts on the 4 mic channels is sweet. Dedicated line in & out plus the 4 other channels that go straight to some very decent converters. Lotta power in that box for a small studio.

I had one for a while and while the pres were better than the ones built into my Apollo, they didn't hold up to better pres I had like Dakings or good Neve clones. What I mainly used them for was to expand my original Apollo via ADAT to get to 16 channels. I actually did like the built in compressors and found them very useful for room mics. In the end I upgraded to an Apollo 16 and have enough great outboard pres I didn't have much use for it any longer. For $1100 if it is in good working order that is a great deal. I sold mine on Reverb for 1700 or so. So if you didn't end up digging it you could flip it easily into something else.

Ok I did some drum tests tonight in preparation for a session tomorrow. I agree with jmoose that the blend knobs are a bit odd. Maybe golden ears can hear the difference but to me I needed to go to the extremes to figure it out. However, the drive is very noticeable. "Why does my R10 sound like a literal can of trash?" Oh... I see.
Once I figured that out, I think I like what I'm hearing.
Thoughts...
- I also found the compression nice on the way in. I was doing a mid/side four mic approach so I think the roominess benefitted from the light compression. Nothing I'd ever patch in though but really easy to flip that little switch. - The I/O matrix is what I was interested in and seeing this thing it's very appealing. Proper send/returns. Kill switches on the inserts. 8 bypassed inputs.
At first I found the look of it to be a bit 90's Prosumer but I got used to it. It looks better when it's switched "on" and the needles are doing their thing. I'm not one who cares about gear aesthetics unless it's gaudy which I don't like. This is pushing it a bit for my taste but not over the line.
Curious to test the pres out with a known quantity. In this case... my voice through an SM7. Something I've heard through probably two dozen different chains.
Last point. Yeah, this is in good shape, I could easily flip it for $1500 or more.
