Iāve found my new obsession Haim are fucking awesome. I love their latest record. Rostam (ex-Vampire Weekend) worked on it and it sounds phenomenal. Dude is one of my favorite producers.

Wasn't there something about Milli Vanilli and lip-syncing being bad, like around 30 years ago? It's ok now?

Anderson .Paak is a badass. Totally. First time I heard 'Celebration' my heart beat faster, knowing there was hope.

I didn't watch it but I haven't seen any lip syncing in the couple clips I've caught. Who was (allegedly) lip syncing?
Also, re: get off my lawn...
I'm not hip to almost any of this stuff, it's not my scene. But I think there's all kinds of creativity and talent flowing around out there. Like all young pop musicians before them, if these people's parents/aunts/uncles reaction to what they were doing was, "Yeah, that's nice, I don't find that weird or challenging at all and I have no need to announce that it's not as good as the _________ that I cut my teeth on. Bravo kids!", well...they would have failed. Musicians/writers/interpreters do new stuff. It's their job. It was the job of whatever sacrosanct music we each hold up as benchmark, too. And when we were young and hormonal and that stuff was making its indelible stamp on us, our parents/grandparents didn't get it either. They weren't supposed to.

I can't watch that whole thing, heheh. I'll take your word for it. What I heard was the usual thing of using a bunch of doubles or whatever. The person is still live on their mic but there's also a bunch of backing tracks. But I don't really care, that stuff is not my scene. With my comment above I didn't mean to imply that everything pop people are doing today is great. Some of it strikes me as so f*cking dumb. And usually the more explicit the content, the dumber the music. That gratuitous stuff is usually a cover for not having anything interesting to say. But it always has been, right down the decades. It just gets more explicit as each generation requires more stimulus to be shocked/thrilled. But whatever, there are probably layers and layers that I don't get. And I don't have any interest in getting it. Whatever distinctions make this banger track about my ass a better piece of art than that banger track about my ass are profoundly boring to me. I was thinking more about Haim or Harry Styles or Eilish or Bruno Mars or some of the folk and Americana stuff. I don't really listen to any of it but I keep some tabs on it from a distance and I think there's as much genuine craft going on as there ever was. Lots of stuff that wasn't designed to reach me doesn't. But that's ok. Pop music has always been pretty vacuous. I mean, hell, teenagers are pretty vacuous. But I think there are creative standouts in any generation and some people are gonna gravitate toward them and (many more) others are gonna gravitate toward the ass tracks. I can't get myself too get worked up about it anymore.

I missed most of it cooking. Our family sat down to watch right when Savage started. My kids know the songs, so it was pretty funny. My 8 year old boy was laughing but wisely asked if he could go get a cookie? To that I enthusiastically said āyeah!ā Like.. phew! Glad he will miss some of this. Suddenly my wife started hitting me and calling me a jerk. She thought I was cheering āyeah!ā to the booties. Haha..
Anyway, after it was over they repeated from the beginning, so I saw the live bands. That was great to see.

Seems like itās starting to correct itself. Yeah I totally agree. I mean there is certainly no short supply of just garbage drivel out there. And the nonexistent barrier to entry (with anyone being able to distribute their music) means we get to hear it all. Maybe I have a sunnier view of the market because I've been in school with ~20 year olds for the last four years. I've been pleasantly surprised at how much they disdain crappy, derivative music and how much exploring they do across the generations of records. It's refreshing.

Wasn't there something about Milli Vanilli and lip-syncing being bad, like around 30 years ago? It's ok now? At this point Iām shocked when somebody actually plays one of these big gigs live. There is so much that can go wrong ( remover Adel and the piano on the island in the middle of the venue?) for the most part these shows always suck. They also book the biggest act, not the best live acts.

There's no way that level of production and dancing is happening while singing. And keep in mind the Grammys are about recordings. People are nominated and win based on the strength of their recordings, so if that's what we hearing... I don't actually remember the last time I watched the show, or was aware of many of the artists. Last year I listened to Billie Eieish after the fact, when everyone was talking about her. Its cool, and I liked what I heard but I didn't go back to it. This year I of course knew WAP, which I think is cool for what it is and that it became a thing, socially. That Haim clip looked interesting. I dg what Bruno Mars does in nodding to the past and continuing. I don't really go looking for him, but when I come across his stuff, I generally enjoy it.

My son Soren has gotten really into Billie Eilish and The Weeknd over the past 2-3 months, so I've listened to quite a bit more from those artists than I ever would have prior to his interest. It's been fun listening, actually. Both of those artists know what they're doing.

I am (almost) ashamed to admit that I don't really know how long it's been since I watched the Grammys. A long time. I'm a blues and its progeny kinda guy, so there's never enough of that for me on these shows. I like lots of other music, but there has to be a combination of refined aesthetics while at the same time being visceral. (I feel like I'm about to start "dancing about architecture", as a wise man once said.)
As a live performer these last (too many years to recount), I abhor lip-syncing. But I get it.
I think I recall Aerosmith at the Grammys doing "Come Together" live many moons ago, and being blown away.
Things change and it's really not important whether I like them changes...or not. š¤ā

Wasn't there something about Milli Vanilli and lip-syncing being bad, like around 30 years ago? It's ok now? Trail blazers. Completely ahead of their time. Today they'd be worshipped as heroes. Had no idea the Grammy were on. Can't remember the last time I watched them. Completely irrelevant to my world, yet somehow I've been plying a living out of music for two decades. I do legitimately feel sorry for Milli Vanilli.
