I started this early in the winter, got the guitar passes done and then it got to cold to work and, unusually, it never warmed up enough until this week to get back in the ol' barn, which is weird, but not the weirdest thing that happened this winter. Basically I'm interest in picking up another 4 channels of some kind of preamp with old RCA, Avedis Ma5 and Audio-Scape v108 being at the top of the list. I threw in the Coil and Metric Halo's ULN 8 and ULN2 pres for comparison. My basic approach is to set up level of the guitar for each preamp, do a warm up, take a break and then do two full takes of the guitar to a click on each preamp, then the same with the vocal. The guitar mic is a Neumann KM84 and the vocal mic is a Neumann U67RI. Metric Halo ULN8 convertors, 96/24, raw wave tracks, not compression, not eq. 6" from the vocal mic capsule, no head pulling so you can get an idea of sibilance. KM84 was about 18" from the guitar. Guitar was a battered 1970 Martin D35 with medium strings. Really loving the Avedis. www.dropbox.com/sh/2go32zo9j9mh5sf/AADWThEAiGg_HdbxfX-vvtbUa?dl=0

Appreciate you posting this. I've got the MA5 and have been seriously considering the Coil for vocals with a 67 style mic.

I tried using an SA-70 with a U67 for vocals while tracking the last Avett Bros record, and it simply would not stay clean enough unless padded, then output was really too low. Wasn't a happy combo. Those guys do project quite a bit.
Avedis sounds nice here.

I've seen them a few times at Merlefest, they have such great voices. Love the Avedis. The Ba-31a almost has that similar vibe - just a bit light in the bottom.

Yep, that RCA version is the lightest bottom of the SS stuff.

I have lots of respect for the MA5, and the AS-V108 is interesting, Im surprised how much over lap there is with the coil (to my ears at least)

Thanks for taking the time to listen and respond. Especially you Doug, your expertise is really valuable. While I'm not looking for 'guidance' per se, it's always interesting to hear thoughts as it helps to combat confirmation bias and I find these kinds of raw tracks helpful to evaluate in the context of your own workflow and space.
Since I am most familiar with the Coils in this kind of application, next I will be taking the Vox/guit Coil pair and doing a simple mix with EQ and compression and then doing the same with each pair of MA5 and BA31a to see how they EQ/comp. Especially interested in the bottom of the BA31a - 95% of the time I'm using a shelf down there anyway, so it will be instructive to see how much bass can be pulled out and how each pair compare as the highs and mids get pushed forward to the point of uneasiness.

I'm amazed how open the Coil sounds. I always understood it to be very dark but here it's actually very detailed and clear.

They are pretty great.
FYI: I forgot to mention on a couple of guitar tracks if it seems a little nosier on the in/outs it was raining off and on, I have a sheet metal roof and the pre(s) for the guitar were cranked.

Coil guitar feels like it's a foot closer than the others. Listening that a couple rounds and then jumping to the RCA makes the guitar feel like a dobro.

Maybe it's just confirmation bias but I do feel like I hear some of those same qualities on Swafford's Coil acoustic guitar samples. It's a very appealing sound to me.

Any chance one can get access to these files again? Dropbox link above is no longer working. Would like to know how the ULN-8 preamps fared against the Coil and Avedis in particular...
