Don’t forget headphone amp quality too! Ever since I got my Lynx, I feel like my headphones all have a new lease on life. My dt880’s never sounded so good! I had a rnd headphone amp before this too, and I gotta say, the lynx absolutely kills it.

I'd encourage everyone to read nwavguy.blogspot.com
A lot of "high-end" headphones and home audio is smoke and mirrors. I remember the first time I heard some $3000 cd player. Sales guy promised "it will blow your mind". In actuality, it sounded just like any other cd player really. I've been to a few meets and conventions. Sure, I'd like to own some of the $5000 electrostat setups I've heard. But they're not really "better" than something like an RS-1, K702, or DT990. More just different. I'm sure very few amps and dacs are released with all the relevant scientific measurements. People that are into headphone stuff, or maybe even home audio in general, remind me of recruits in Amway type businesses who wait for the big "explosion" every year and it never happens. What nwavguy proved was that you could make transparent equipment without a bunch of money. If accuracy was the goal, there'd be no continuing demand for products. Getting back to expensive headphones, I've heard a lot that I just flat out didn't like. Those LCD Planars always sounded strange to me. There's been some Stax I didn't care for. If you're someone who has piles of money you don't know what to do with, I'd say knock yourselves out and collect whatever you liked after going to a convention. Otherwise try a hifime saber dac, the O2 amp, and some K701s and see what you think.

can't go wrong with the beyerdynamic 770s for general tracking, imo. comfortable, decent isolation, and decent sonics for the price.
for drumming or other high spl sources, i've found the gk music ultraphones to be the best isolation. getting to the end of a full day tracking drums and not having my ears ringing is such a beautiful thing.
for mixing, i use audeze lcd-x headphones & they've got to be one of the best investments i've made. my primary goal with headphones (specifically in mixing) is to find the most accurate and detailed sonics at the lowest possible volume, and the lcd-x headphones scratch that itch for me.

Hey John something to keep in mind knowing how little EQ spikes get on your nerves, they are a fact of life with most headphones! First in most phones you have a single driver covering the entire range so you have a bunch of compromises there to get that range. Then all dynamic drivers response is a series of jagged little peaks and dips, unlike monitors you don’t have the luxury of the room reflections smoothing these out. The difference in drivers is also exaggerated in headphones, again you don’t have the room and acoustical summing to cover these differences. A good headphone amp can make all the difference, but the thing about headphones is the impendance is all over the place so there is no universal “perfect amp”, also look at the actual impendance curve you might be shocked at how low a 770ohm headphone impendance drops at various frequencies.
Lastly fit, somebody probably designed your Beyer’s around MR Beyer, everybody’s head is different.
It seams like everybody is making headphones these days and I’m amazed at how many new mid priced cans seam to be driven by 2 factors. 1 how loud can they play driven by an IPhone 2 how much bass can they get out of an iPhone.
