My next purchase is going to be a shotgun mic. I'm trying to decide what direction/how much dough.
Right now I'm waffling between the bang for buck Rode NTG3 or bumping up to the Level of a Senni MKH8060. For the price of the MKH 8060 I could get the Rode plus a full blimp/shockmount/deadcat/boompole rig. With the MKH8060 I'm pretty sure I'll be satisfied with no need to upgrade.
For my work I'm mostly in the studio, but every once in a while I'll do a little location stuff, or need to go out and grab some custom sounds to and add to my own library. Otherwise I'd save up and lay down for a Shoeps CMIT5 that seems to be the big favourite on the scene.
Not too interested in the MKH416 as I don't think it'll be much better (if at all) then the NTG3. Based on clips I've heard on line. I'm hoping to keep the mic under $1500.
My plan is to save up until I've got the spare change for one and see if I can do my own shootout. To decide with my ears if the 8060 is worth it for me to spend nearly double the price.
Anyone on here compared the 8060 to an NTG3? Any thoughts? Any other suggestions for other shotguns I should test out in the $700-$1500 range also?
Cheers.

Why not rent one while saving for the MKH8060?
On the other hand i've heard good things (from respected audio engineers) about the stereo Audio-Technica shotgun mics and it's within your budget.

I can rent some APEX shotguns that I'm not really interested in, Sennheiser MKE66s (have rented and really dislike the harsh sound of), and I might be able to rent an MKH416 but it's rarely available because it's always out on rent. I'd be willing to rent the 416 although I'm honestly more interested in the NTG3 than the 416 Hey Cowboy! Good to see you on here too.

I'll try doin some research on the Audio Technica shotguns too. Just never heard anyone mention them before. Assumed the worst.

If you can rent a few to A/B, that'd be the way to go. The Rode is decent, but I think the extra money for a used 416 might be the way to go if you use it very often. Good luck with whatever you choose...

Good luck with whatever you choose... I'd like to compare those head to head myself. Most online shootouts between the 416 & the NTG3 I actually prefer the sound of the NTG3. There was one shootout that I preferred the 416, so it would be nice to test for myself. To me the 416 sounds thin compared to the NTG3 (from said online shootouts). From the multiple shootouts I've come across for the most part I tend to like the midrange girth the NTG3 has. It just might be a taste preference myself. Another thing to consider is that I'll probably be using whatever shotgun I get as much or more for foley and effects grabbing as I will be for on set dialog. Also the NTG3 spec wise has a pretty even off axis plot. That can make a huge difference in usefulness to me. Out of these two they are both listed to have the same level of noise but the Rode is slightly more sensitive which gives it slight edge for signal to noise ration in the big picture. This sound effect & foley stuff really benefits from the quietest mics possible. That's the reason I'm thinking about just saving up for the 8060. I think it might be the king when it comes to noise/sensitivity in a shotgun. I'm super still on the fence between the 8060 & the NTG3. Took a peek at the Audio Technica BP4029 (I think that's the stereo shotgun you were referring to) It looks cool for the money, but as a straight up shotgun (what I'm in need of most right now in my collection) it looks as though some of these other options will out perform. If I really need a stereo shotgun I can try strapping a fig 8 mic I've already got on top of any shotgun for a shotgun M/S solution. I've got stereo field mics I can get use out of already. My primary concern right now is the shotgun thing. Once I've the dough ready I see if my local L&M will be willing to bring in one of each (8060 & NTG3 & maybe the 416) so I can do some head to head testing to decide if the extra five bills for an 8060 is going to be an actual warranted expense for my needs. Any other shotguns I should see if I can get in to pit against the 8060 & NTG3 for under $1300? Thanks for the responses so for though. Cheers.

Good points. If you end up liking the 416, maybe look around for an older used one in good shape. FWIW, I bought an older one (with the tuchel connector). Had it checked by a tech, bought an adapter and I still only paid about $300 for it. Sounds great, too!

Paying up to $1000 for a new one is where looking elsewhere is more appealing to me.

I would try to find an old used senni 816. I used one for years for film and comml work and They come up on ebone in the $500 to $700 from time to time. Better reach than the 416 too.
Best

I got a 15" Audio Technica shotgun mic on ebay for 15$ once. I can't remember the model but it sounds perfectly fine. Maybe just a little lighter on the bass than my friend's senn 816
