Anyone had hands on this? In my lust for the unobtanium 176, I started rationalizing obtanium things lol. But this video sounds pretty fantastic. Now I've started thinking...hmm, this might be a really good option.

Dammit.
Listen to that thing.
I'd buy it for what it does to the drums alone.

Good God. I might as well change my username to 'Retro Worship Account' at this point.

Hmmm. I didn't think it was doing a whole lot. The drums sounded the best, the acoustic guitar OK, the other stuff I wasn't too floored by. Maybe I would dial in different settings.

It sounds very nice, like almost all the Retro products. I would love to hear this unit up against an audioscape D-Comp.

I guess I was expecting more wild action or something, not sure why. But surely that smooth transparent sound is useful on some sources.

Transparent gain reduction seems to be a characteristic of all their stuff...and I'm really drawn to that. This reminds me a lot of the sta.

Went through the same dilemma on the Revolver but held out for a 176. Just wasn't blown away by the demo enough to pursue it. Love all the Retro gear though. Have a 2A3 here as well.

That demo is crazy but I’ve heard mixed things about them in the real world. I still want one.

I went throught that process, bought the Retro 176 now I want another one. Bentley, what are your thoughts on the 2a3? I've been very tempted. Don't want to change the main subject here however.

Yea, I kind of figured getting away with gain reduction musically/transparently was one of the things hardware did better. Maybe I'm wrong. I do think it's bringing tone to the table too, though.

The 2A3 definitely has a sound to it... a touch of "warmth" for lack of a better description. Haven't had too many things to use it on since I got but it mostly sits on my master buss. Love the 40 Hz sub filter switched in although it doesn't always work. Top end is sweet and I always gravitate towards adding too much since it's not harsh. Like all Retro gear, it's built like a tank. Yeah, I'd love another 176 too.... just makes me smile every time I use it. The asymmetry function is pure gold.

Hi folks. First time poster here. Hope you don't mind me jumping in. I've had a Revolver for two years now. I use it for tracking and on the mix bus. It is a fairly transparent and polite comp. It will do gentle leveling on most sources, imparting a nice smoothness, and a sort of euphonic sheen that I like, but it can't clamp down and really squash a track--that is not in its nature. Also keep in mind that it is a comparatively slow comp (the fastest attack time is 2ms). When I track with it I sometimes use it in conjunction with an 1176 (for vocals mostly), or by itself it is nice on everything if you don't really need to clamp down. I like it on the mix bus, where it imparts a nice subtle glue and can remain fairly transparent even with a lot of gain reduction as long as you keep the threshold high (and therefore the ratio low). Phil Moore said (in one of the NAMM videos on YT that feature the Revolver) that the Revolver is essentially the same comp that is in the Retro Powerstrip, so if you are familiar with that unit you will have a good idea of what the Revolver is like. Hope this helps.

Gorgeous. Those tracks sounded pretty great before treatment though. Seems like it brings a very expensive extra few percent that I’ve been trying to convince myself that I don’t need. Compelling for sure.

I finally got a chance to demo one last week! It was such a joy to use, I got lost in it and shot an hour long video 🤣. Had to edit it down but here it is:

Anyone notice the L/R balance skews right when the Revolver comes in on the electric guitar in the Vintage King demo?

“ I always felt the phantom center of the stereo image become tighter. For weeks I kept assuming I was wrong, but I kept hearing this effect.” I completely agree☝🏻

Anyone notice the L/R balance skews right when the Revolver comes in on the electric guitar in the Vintage King demo? Common amongst stereo vari-mu. Painstakingly matched GR tubes will minimize that….and they may drift out of match before long.
