The youtube music teacher Rick Beato plays a lot of hit songs and he isolates the individual tracks. How does he do that? Where do you get a multitrack version of a song, a copy of the master?

While you can get a lot of things on the internet....multi-tracks of hit songs are usually not one of them. There has been maybe a couple historical tracks ‘leaked’ over the years, but in general def not the norm.
Using DSP to isolate things is another story. Maybe that’s how he does it?

If you want the, uh, non-illicit way of doing this, mixthemusic.com has stems for a wide variety of hit songs that you can buy. And as soundintheround noted, MWTM is another great resource.

He plays a couple of master tapes to Pro Tools transfers that were done a decade or two ago (I think?) over a few years by engineers that had access to them still. It was kind of a thing for a while, back when GS was more of a hangout for many of the big names. There were a ton of them at one point being shared. Some of the best of it are the isolated David Lee Roth vocals that came out from Runnin With the Devil. Just brilliant and hilarious at the same time. My buddy has a few of them but it's been years since I've heard them. One of the most impactful one I can recall is a song from Queen, maybe Somebody to Love or Killer Queen, where they're all four singing around one mic for backups on one track. Live. It was just insane. Pulled up on one fader. Boston's More Than a Feeling transfer is amazing too, and I think Rick does a rundown of that one that is really great. Heard it years ago in my buddy's studio and when you realize that at that point in the song where it's the pre-solo thing that it's Brad Delp's voice and not a guitar that's soaring... holy shit. Just incredible hearing that pulled up on one fader.

I know they are out there. Hell in school we had multitracks of Steve wonders superstition and we had bohemian raphsody too.
No idea where they came from.

Rick gathered his collection of multitracks over the years via interactions with other producers/label execs/artists. If he doesn't have the multitracks for a particular tune he wants to highlight he'll just use the stereo master.

Most were probably copied by individuals who worked at studios where surround mixes were being done. The ones I've heard were obviously analog copies of copies of copies.
