I have an older Samsung hd204ui.
It powers but disc doesn’t spin or I don’t hear it.
I opened it up and can manually move disc and move the reader arm, not certain what they are called.
But after new power up, disc doesn’t spin and it isn’t recognized.
Any more trouble shooting I can do?
thx!

Well for one, opening one up and exposing the discs to dust is dangerous. moving the arms without the disc spinning is also dangerous since the spinning acts to keep the heads from touching the surface of the plates. If the heads touch the surface it's likely that the data is damaged. But otherwise, you can try to find the exact same model drive with the exact same firmware. From there you can swap the mainboard if you also swap the EEPROM from the original drive. The eeprom contains all the calibration data, etc, so it has to match the drive you are using. It might get it working enough to get the data off the drive but you should never trust the drive again.

Thx, yes I was spinning drive while moving head. I got the drive spinning at power up but then arm jumps back and forth trying to read and retry but not being successful. Drive is not recognized.
I buttoned it up may just leave it for now. I used to back up the important data and copied to other drives. I have forgotten what is on the drive, was just curious if I could get it working:)
You know, a covid project:)
Thx.
