Just wondering if anyone might have interest in such a thing? It would be cool to see you guys on-screen and chat, especially if the Bourbon sub-board is invited. I thought about posting this on the main board, as it gets the most traffic, but thought we could start here and see who's into the idea. I would be up for just about any night of the week except a Tuesday or Wednesday, but I'm guessing a weekend night might have the best chance for the largest number of people. Anybody interested?

So what would you guys say to this Friday night? I was thinking maybe 9pm or so, Eastern Standard Time. That would allow West Coasters to join in after work. But I'm flexible: If that's a bad day, we could do something different, and/or if 9pm EST is too late, we could start earlier.
I've got a few ideas for format, but not enough time to write it out at the moment. I'll add to this in the next day or two...

That's a little late for me but I could probably do it. If iPhone works that would be good for me, I have a little tripod I can set up. Don't know if that would show everyone, I've never used Zoom. There's also a laptop I could try to borrow. Whatever is best for everyone and especially the person setting it all up.

Zoom is easy-peasy, on phone, ipad, PC/Mac. Where do we stand on this? The holidays doth approach!

If we're going to do an hour on Zoom we would need someone with a paid account. The free version allows up to 100 people but is limited to 40 minutes.
And where's the rest of the gang? Do we need to do something to raise the visibility on this, or is everyone else camera-shy?

Do we need to do something to raise the visibility on this, or is everyone else camera-shy? Doesn't seem like 100 people are interested. We could always just stop at 40 minutes too.. I doubt the difference between an hour and 40 minutes would kill the festivities.

Don't want to get ahead of the other mark williams here since he is the one who came up with the idea. Mark, if you want to host the Zoom that's great. I'm happy to do so as well, as I use Zoom every day in my day job. Whoever sets it up can post the link here. If you've not used Zoom before, it's going to ask you to download a small file when you join the meeting. I can also list some basic setup/usage info here to make sure those who haven't used it know how to specify audio/video sources if they are using an external mic/speaker/webcam. Zoom has built-in backgrounds, which is kind of a green-screen effect...just in case you don't want anyone to see what is behind you. You can also download something from the web or use your own image. There are also grid/speaker settings to change whether you're just viewing one person or everyone "Brady Bunch" style. Not looking to overcomplicate this. Could be as simple as just conversing, a little about ourselves, or talking about what we're doing for the holidays. Of course, gear is always a great topic!

We could certainly go with earlier than 9pm EST. I was mostly picking that so West Coasters could participate after getting off work. But it doesn't look like anybody from the West Coast is joining into the discussion. So would 8pm EST be better?
teejay, I'm more than happy either way re: hosting. I've never actually hosted one of these before, but I've participated in a few, so I know how it works in general. I'll PM you in a few mins and we can sort it out.
In terms of topics, I thought what we could do is honor the overall board aesthetic by saying upfront NO POLITICS TALK and I'd add to that NO COVID TALK except under the following circumstance:
I thought it might be interesting to hear something from each person about at least one thing they're thankful for from this year. If you guys are up for that, it would give some kind of "format": each person will have "the (virtual) floor" for a few minutes. "What I'm thankful for" might have something to do with COVID in general one way or another.
Really what I'm interested in is avoiding "COVID is fake news!" or "Everyone who thinks COVID is fake news is stupid!" kind of stuff. Let's make this virtual event a way to connect us and to support one another, rather than an opportunity to argue and divide.
Sooooooo, let's nail down the time. 8pm EST or 9pm EST?

I'm CST so either works for me.
Appreciate the topic and guidelines, Mark. We're all surrounded enough on a daily basis by the negative. Keeping this positive and focusing on increasing our relationships and camaraderie is in the spirit of the holidays. And frankly, we'll all benefit from the connection and support as we finish out the year. Looking forward to "meeting" everyone!
