Sorry that this isn't sexy, but I've done some checking and only found an answer on the reverse scenario.
I currently run Logic X on a Firewire laptop with a Metric Halo LIO, also Firewire/2D currently. I am thinking about a way to first update my LIO to 3D and also add a ULN8 ('cause special pricing) for an extra 8 channels, and then, as a second major step a little later upon financial recovery, upgrade the computer to something that will come with Thunderbolt 3.
So, the question is; can I adapt a laptop with an FW2 port to converters with TB3 ports (even if it is two adapters in series) to get me through the in-between-time, and run Logic and the MH software ?
If yes, would I need the edge card for the newly upgraded LIO ?

Seems like there are a few areas of confusion here.
Metric Halo isn't using Thunderbolt. The new 3D uses either Ethernet or USB.
So if you upgrade your box and/or buy a new box, you'll need to connect to your Mac with either of those connection types. Does your machine have an Ethernet port? If so, just use that and daisy chain as many MH boxes as you can afford to get one giant interface.
