just got my own in the mail today! wish i had it for a guitar tracking session yesterday, but it'll have to wait a bit to get put through the paces - i got nothing but mixing on my horizon for the next couple weeks!

Only got to try mine out for a small bit of vocals but it sounds really great! Beat my Lawson 47FET for this particular singer! Looking forward to putting it through the paces

I got it already! I'm in the middle of a move so I haven't gotten a chance to unbox it or even do anything with it yet but I'm looking forward to doing something with that later today.
Update: Can report, the Serrano has one of the features that I associate with Neumann 87s: the elusive Neumann “Ess”, where the energy from sibilance is distributed smoothly over 5-10k instead of a narrow resonance peak, as you find in cheaper mics. It also has that overall quality of sounding like “a voice” rather than “voice through a mic”. I look forward to further testing 😀

Another quality I finally realized about a U87i is... A subtle "relaxed" tonal element, versus the modern AI which is a little more "In Yo Face".  Chris |

Can report, the Serrano has one of the features that I associate with Neumann 87s: the elusive Neumann “Ess”, where the energy from sibilance is distributed smoothly over 5-10k instead of a narrow resonance peak, as you find in cheaper mics. It also has that overall quality of sounding like “a voice” rather than “voice through a mic”. I look forward to further testing 😀 This is a really well-expressed way to describe something really abstract and nuanced. |

Also using Mogami Gold here. I've been meaning to mention it to Carlos for awhile, but have been really busy. Most of the time it's not an issue, but a couple of times I've ended up selecting a different mic for the source as a result. I think it was VO in both cases.
The specific RF I've had the most noticeable issue with is a cell phone. My iPhone, actually.

Hey Mark if RF is an issue try Canare Starquad, best cable I have used for RF issues, in fact the guy who first turned me on to it serviced transmitters for what is now Ihear radio. I also seam to recall a conversation with an old TV guy who didn’t like old 87’s because there was a brief period of RF issues, I just can’t remember who it was and what period of 87. |

Hey guys...I'm a day or two away from finishing up my review of the Serrano 87. Just wanted to give RGO a little early preview. Here are a few of the tracks. The acoustic & vocal mixed track has just a little BG1 on the vocal and acoustic, also some delay/verb added. The Dry tracks only have a little high pass eq, no compression of effects. The EG tracks are a re-amp so the performance is exactly the same every time, the only thing that changes is the pick up pattern of the mic. Anyway, I hope this gives anyone interested in the Serrano 87 a few more tracks to hear it on. Thanks for the samples Seawell. The mic sounds nice. Though it doesn't scream U87 at me, I mean I know it's hard to judge online samples but I don't hear that low mid thing that I associate with the U87 and the top definitely sounds brighter than any 87 I've heard, and all the samples I've heard of the Serrano have that same quality. Not to say it's bad sounding at all. This mic actually sounds like it'd work well for modern productions. |
