I got my hands on this beauty about a week ago and I must say that I absolutely love love love the tone of this unit but I've heard someone saying that you can make it better by adjusting the balance of the tubes in the input path (please do correct me if I am wrong) using the balance knob on the back of the unit so I've spent some time searching for the manual for this thing but I couldn't find it anywhere.. even on the manufacturers website!! So I tried sending couple of emails to Retro but they never responded for some reason... (do they normally ignore their customer's email like this or is it just me?) Anyhow.. with all my other options exhausted I was wondering if anyone on this forum could help me out... does anyone know how to use the balance knob on this unit??

I believe you just push in the null button and you hear a test tone, then adjust the balance knob until you hear the least amount of tone...The biggest thing you can do to improve the already great sounding unit (IMHO) is put in a 6386 and take out the two 6BJ6's...Of course, you can keep the 6BJ6's in too for a hairier tone. matt can add too, but I really think the compression is even smoother with the 6386. YMMV. I bought GE 5Star 6386 on Ebay. Ended up being around $130...

JK is referring to controls on the back of the unit: As he says, press the red button and turn the 6V6 balance pot with a screwdriver to minimize the test tone volume. I can confirm that use of a 6386 in place of the 6BJ6's is well worth it. My STA now makes a little less noise (it was OK to begin with) and the compression it imparts is sweeter than ever. In fact, the harder I push it, the better it sounds. Amazing box.
