Thought I had started a thread about the N22 before...not finding it...anyway...about to drag myself upstairs to try it out. I'm excited!

What did you think? From clips I heard, it's brighter than your typical ribbon

Yes, online clips of the N22 definitely sound brighter than other AEA mics.

Yeah - that's what attracted me to it. I tested it out last night...and I think this could be a BIG winner on acoustic. It's bright enough that you don't need EQ, but dark enough where any squelchiness of the mids or top end problems are completely gone. It's audio meat. Shannon's got my pencil mic, but I'm gonna grab it today...I could see this being huge either by itself, mixed in with another SDC or stereo...
Vocals were really nice too. Smooth as butter. The proximity effect wasn't pronounced at all compared to other ribbons and of course, this one is brighter than most. I found myself pulling out around 400hz and a little around 1khz. The mic MIGHT be a little pronounced around 2khz...I wish that number was around 5khz instead. Listening to shootouts of this and the R92, the R92 might be a little toppier and bigger on bottom - would love to have one for comparison.

Good news John.
I know they're different animals, but I would love to hear this against the Neumann K84 I used on my last session, that's my benchmark now.

Very curious about this one. I have an R92 which is great on harsh percussion, acoustic and voice.

I've been looking for a 44bx but I think the n22 or r92 would be more practical in a smaller room.

cowboycoalminer brought his R84 over and we compared. He also brought the AEA mic pre. They are definitely voiced differently. The 84 is really dark - like you would expect a ribbon to be. When paired with the AEA pre and eq'd with it, I thought the mids and top were a little sweeter. The N22 sounds similar - the meaty ribbon sound - as the eq'd 84, but more forward in the 2khz region. Different sounds, but the N22 is ready to go out of the box. Can't wait to stereo mic with this thing.
