Hi everyone.
I play in a 6 piece band. Our setup Mackie 1608, floor monitor wedges (lots), guitar amps miced into the desk, bass amp with output to desk,Keyboard straight to desk, 5 vocal mic's, computer controlled lights, and finally Roland edrum with zilgian gen 16 cymbals (big fat fake kick drum out front for the look). I love this set-up so does our drummer its fast to set-up and pull down. All the instruments run thru the desk so getting the levels right can be done by the engineer via an ipad (awsome tech).
Here's where the Edrums shine we play in small pubs with capacity of around 100 people to larger out side gigs 1000 plus. The edrums mean we can sound good fast. With the drums going thru the mains the engineer has complete control of the levels we don't blast out the small venues and at the same time can sound massive outside. The zilgian gen16 acoustic/electric cymbals are awsome full dynamic control and feel but going thru the desk. Our drummer loves these cymbals and are what make's the ekit work so well. IMO cymbals are the weak point on ekit's zilgian has overcome that problem.
In a great sounding room with a good engineer and a great drummer a real kit is clearly the best. However when presented with bad sounding spaces so-so engineer Ekits are a viable alternative and infact may now be the best option.

Most posts have a question but, I can concur that they can work I used them for 2 years in a small house of worship and we had an impeccable sound.

I've always wanted to try out those Gen 16s.
My bands drummer just bought a Whitney Nesting Penguin kit. Very loud kit, but the fun part is watching him carry a drumkit into the venue in one trip by himself.
As a drummer, I want to say that I'd probably want something along the lines of a Pearl Epro kit for comforts sake. Welcome to the forum by the way. .

@jordanvoth Thanks for the welcome. We have had the gen16's for a while now and had a few teething trouble's. Crack the hihat and had the main unit fail. Zilgian have been fantastic about the warranty and replaced the parts with no question's and they are clearly upgrades, so I don't think it's going to be an issue into the future.
The gen16's are a game changer, our drummer used his acoustic kit until we put the 16's on the ekit and now he loves the whole ekit. There was almost tears when we where waiting for the hihats to come back(warrenty), almost:). He put his regular hihat on the ekit and hated it. Our drummer went from someone who wouldent have a bar of ekit except for recording midi data to loving them so much so he will not go back to an acoustic kit. They look amazing with the blue led lighting from the mic's and sound just as good especially since the software update. Playing and feel they are acoustic cymbals. Having the cymbals run thu the mains in a simple system is gold.
Con's you cannot have to much cymbal in the drummers foldbacks otherwise they will feed back. They are not that quiet nowwhere near as loud as regular cymbals but they are to loud for 2am apartment practices. They are not cheap (but worth it IMO).
I have been paying in bands for a long time and just love the flexibility and sound of the ekit with gen16's.
The Whitney Nesting Penguin kit looks interesting not much of a jump to an ekit if you drummer has taken that step. Pearl make's a drum heads that converts acoustic kits into ekit's I havn't tryed one.

This is the first real-world "review" of the Gen16s that I've actually read with interest. The hats on any ekit are the defining factor, and it's good to know these Gen16s are so close. AFAIK, the Gen16s run their own sound module? Does it put out MIDI at the same time? I have a Roland kit available in my studio setup ( not a drummer myself ) and am interested in exploring this option.

Hi keymod
The Gen16 module isent set-up for recording. We are going to try and record the cymbals but they will have to be played separately. The gen16 module has 5 input's from the cymbals which are basicly mic inputs runs thru the module and leaves as a stereo output (no midi). You could split the mic output from each cymbal and record that and run it thru the module later wouldn’t be very neat but would probably work. The gen16's only output is unbalanced 1/4 stereo. You can run your drum module into an input (audio) the gen16 module can mix the cymbals with the drums and have 1 stereo out to the desk. We don't do this we keep it separate. For live sound the gen16's are gold recording not so much. Hopefully zilgian are working on something for the studio because it would be a great solution. Hopefully my explanation makes sense.

formatcyes, sorry if my post seemed rude - not intentional, just being a goof.
Appreciate the info on the cymbals and love the penguin kit - I was unaware. Glad you're here.

Really love playing an 18" kick drum. Like you said, the Gen16 stuff, while interesting lacks some key things to make it a viable recording solution. I'd rather wait and see if someone comes up with something tailored for studio use. These and an acoustic kit would really open up some possibilities for drum sounds.
