Hey All,
Kind of a strange scenario I think, but someone asked me about this so I though I would pass it on to you guys.
There seems to be a lot of guys that are using VI's that want to add a bit of hair to the signal by using the line in on a mic pre. Maybe a Neve style or a Capi or similar. My console has built in conversion, so pro tools is routed directly to the channel strips. Do you see any reason not to stick a "line amp" on the insert of a channel strip to add a bit of hair? The advantage that I see is that you can level match and bypass the "line amp" to compare and really see what you're adding by doing this. Crank the input of the line amp, and back off the attenuation until you have the hair that you're looking for while maintaining consistent level. Any thoughts?

I do this sometimes with VI's. Using Capi VP28's for this.
Like it, as i feel it sometimes brings VI's to life. Feel more real. Elements also gel better. Add warmth. Only thing is, if i run too many tracks (VI's) through it, it can add quite a bit of noise.

Hi jcoutu1, while I don't know if you're doing something wrong ( or bad for your console ) by patching a micpre into your channelstrip, the use of micpres at line level for VIs sees some use here, like Aurora GTQII & Mercury M72 ( both lots of tonal options ), I use also a DWfearn linepad to bring those levels down to mic : much more room to work with. Although Chandler Zener in THD mode is no slouch either for fattening VIs up Regards, Nico

I definitely use my VP28's on VI's but what Nico said about your console...be careful! What I do is run into line ins on console, EQ, out of console into SSL buss compressor, VP 28's into Burl! Record it and compensate for latency.

jcoutu1 CAPI vp 28's can be gained to line level, just like any piece of rack gear for inserting, once it's set up like that, one + click deserves another -, u mentioned built in conversion, what kind of console are u using?

I have to imagine that as long as the pre being used can be put in line mode and attenuated on the output, it would be no different than inserting an eq or comp.
Thanks for the reassurance.
Console is a Midas VeniceF-32.

I use an old Akai/Roberts tube pre for this. I pad it down 40 db and slam stuff into it. VIs, vocals, snares, whatever. It can get pretty hairy. Modded by Old World Audio for stand alone use.
