Thanks- P I haven't, but I did watch a video the other day where someone replaced the tubes with good brand name tubes and it didn't change a single thing about the unit, so that means the circuit itself is probably where the work needs to be done. |

I have not, but I've read posts that state that KT cut some corners that might make modding to a real Pultec difficult to impossible. I don't remember the details though.

I bought 3 when they first dropped. The high end sounded brittle and not smooth like a Pulgec. Sold them all in a week. I doubt they're worth the effort of modding.

There was a long thread here. Biggest difference is the inductor, making the bandwidths on the boosts much more narrow than standard. If you replace that, you probably have to replace the associated caps. Is there room on the board to easily do that? Dunno. Do that before doing ANYTHING ELSE if it's Pultec sound and shape you are after.

It's a Pultec STYLE EQ, not a Pultec. I LOVE mine. I use mostly the 800Hz, extended HF option to warm up brittle guitars. Works great for that. Don't use the HF much.

So consider anything happening inside to be typical of Behringer's way. It would probably be cheaper to DIY one from scratch than upgrade input and output transformers, and inductors/caps.
Then you would be relying on a Behringer PCB and power supply. Which IME are very unreliable!

Just venting. I cant stand it when a formerly good brand becomes a shell company to sell through a down market company's crap.

It's an interesting idea, but probably could be a little more rewarding to a scratch DIY build with "all the good stuff."
I think the KT is good for what it is, a very cheap hardware EQ that works kind of like a Pultec. I would use it for that if I had a need to do so. I had some but I moved ITB.

I think there is a market to make a better replacement board for the KT using better parts, but I think they are SMD so stock your going to need SMD rework tools and skills! |
