If you have clips you can share I’d love to hear them. From what I’ve heard of the Upton it will have a smoother too end than the others.

i have been in communication with Dave as his own custom wave 251 is also on my purchase horizon. We really do have some nice options out there in 251 world.

Yes budget is a big part of it. I am keeping the SAE-251 and now selling the Dany Bouchard custom D-251 as I have blown the budget and need to get it back in shape for Xmas so I can blow it again. Going for that extra 5-10% in sound can be an expensive but fun experiment.

When I first started speaking with cdkelly we discussed this mic. I wish he had a demo to try out. He does something specific in the circuit to keep a little more low end in than typically expected in a 251.

Is the low end in a 251 due to capsule or circuit?

Is the low end in a 251 due to capsule or circuit? Circuit I believe. Bock does something similar with his 251.

I also think the type of transformer used effects the low end. So anything that use an AMIt14 certainly has a hefty low end. Cinemag has less of a low end but still very present. The Haufe transformer is not so big as the AMI or Cinemag. Now not being very technical minded i am not saying that the transformer is solely responsi le but i think it does contribute to the sound especially in the low end department. These have been by observations in the c12 and 251’s i have had over the years.

I read somewhere that David Bock said the transformer was a major contributor to the weight of its low end.

If you're looking strictly at 251 clones ... Just curious if you've tried the Upton?
The other top "CK-12" capsules out there are the MBHO-Haun (in the Bock), the Tim Campbell (Pearlman 250 & some others) & the Josephson (Josephson 700 series & Manley Gold).
Though not 251 clones ... The Josephson 716 FET & 725 Tube (this one most probably out of price range) are very impressive.

Good luck getting in touch with them. I’ve been trying for months.
