Well here we go again. I have a hankering for a really nice 251 since i sold the Bock 251 a few years ago. i see a nice BSA 250 or for about us$4k i can get a custom Wave 251. Anyone used a BSA m250? I was wanting a more traditional style 251 not so much the modern style 251 like the Bock was. Should i just bite the bullet and get the Wave 251 - i mean Dave is the man for finessing capsules. I just have not spent a lot of money on one mic for quite some time and i only do this recording On the side not as my main gig. Anyway your thoughts of the brains trust are appreciated.

I had a UM25C for a few years. Was a really nice mic. It had a CT12 in it. The other anonymous CK12 style capsules that Oliver used weren’t all that good to my ears. Sounded disconnected to me. The amplifier in that mic was pretty special. It used an odd duck tube (NOS TELEFUNKEN UBC81). Had a 14v heater. Sounded super clear and warm. Very dimensional and intimate. The regular UM25 was nice, but not as special sounding as the one with the CT12. IMHO

In the end I think there were a few UM25's that ended up with Haun capsules but other than than the premium version was my CT12. If you are willing to spend 4000 dollars on a mic there are many, many great mics to choose from.

No one seems to talk about Josephsons ck12 capsule. So it makes it a little tricky . What mic i buy i dont have the luxury of testing it out before hand. Australia do3s have it as good as the rest of the world.

Can we get a Martin John Butler in here please? Martin J Butler seems to know his way around a blackspade! And yes, go to the 251 shootut thread that Johnkenn provided. It is very enlightening.

I didn’t think they made Blackspade anymore. Those tricky non-confrontational pope-guarding Swiss.

I never used a UM25, so I cant speak from experience. I do know that every aspect of their mics are meticulously made by some of the most knowledgeable mic people I’ve encountered yet.
I had 3 versions of their UM17, including the Blue and Red Thiersch capsules. I didn’t fully appreciate them at the time. They were somewhere between an M49 and a U47. It wasn't "reminiscent of" those mics, but in the league of. It turned out after trying quite a few different microphones, I was most compatible with a U67 style capsule.
I do wish I could have afforded to hold onto the Blackspade because it sat in the mix without any EQ, now I have the Soyuz 0-19, and the Stam SA67, both have U67 style capsules and they sound great., But I wouldn’t hesitate to use Blackspade microphones in a pro session, they’re the real deal, not cheap imitators.

Also keep in mind, the Josephson capsule is NOT available to buy on it’s own. They don’t sell them to the public.

My UM4x makes me pretty happy. It's the bottom of the Blackspade line. I went with the two position PSU. I'm not an engineer or a professional musician; I'm just looking to satisfy the muse, so I really have little in the way of expectations. I just want to make it sound as good as I can given my limited skills. I throw up the mic and stand about 20" away. I don't use a filter so I never sing directly into the mic. Great River MP-500NV --> Warm Audio WA-2A taking a good 5+db off the top. I know I'm not as discerning as folks here. I usually get into trouble the more I mess with my vocals so once in the box, I'll skip the EQ, except for high pass, add a touch of delay, tack on a few compressors in series, de-ess with clip-gain, and add reverb - done. Here's a rough of a song I'm working on right now. If you don't like the sound - it's probably me and the soundcloud mangler - not the mic :} https%3A//soundcloud.com/m57/goldilocks

At 4K I would have a hard time overlooking the Upton or even saving a bit more and grabbing the Bock 251. The Bock 251 is usually the one I call out in shootouts, although I know it has a bit more of a smiley face than most of the 251s with a bit more high end and a deeper low end.

The low end of the Bock 251 caught me by surprise. It goes really low and deep like a long ribbon. Reaches out and grabs the street rumble if you don't watch out.

Just had my first taste of a Josephson C12 capsule in a 250 build. My initial thoughts were I can hear the mids not so much low end as I my other 251's and the high was not brittle. Got my Dany Bouchard 251 one out and thought wow Dany's model is still quite good and has a hotter output but that 12AY tube is not the same as GE 6072. Got my SAE custom 251 and tested that one and though wow the Cardoid mode is a lot wider then the Josephson one and it has way more low end detail which I would not need on vocals and then I went back to the Josephson CK 12 capsule mic and re-listened and then you appreciated how focused it sounded and how pleasant it was compared to the others. The top was not brittle, there was no huge low end, actually i think the low end is a little shy after listening to the SAE251. But the Josephson c12 -250 model was quite a smooth, rich sound. I think I like it. But now the next question would be .......what does the Upton sound like.....
