I've got both the 14b and Weight Tank Compressor.
My Weight Tank ends up on lead vocals on most sessions. 14B gets more use on individual instruments (Mando, fiddle, banjo, percussion). That's just my take though.

Compressors compress analog audio ( ac voltage ) so it will work wonderful on whatever you send thru it.
I have heard a few mixes and lead vocals from Jesse w his 14 B & weight tanks ( doing -20db of GR lmfao ) & they are amazing sounding units.
Also the 14B has two build processes, P2P hand wired & PCB now so there is a big savings to be had if you aren’t growing $ trees or writing off business expenses. $3199 vs $1999
Still need to add a Weight Tank to my studio. Wish I had snagged them when they were preorder/ introduced.

I have been debating whether to sell my Locomotive 286a 2 ch mic pre, but after reading this thread about their compressor, I am having second thoughts. So, the question for here is whether for just purely male vocal, I should start out with the weight tank or the 14b? I see some posts on this, but I would like to here more. Also, is the weight tank more noisy? Thank you in advance. (My first post and a little messy - sorry.)

Personally, for your vocal, I would start with the 14B, but I wouldn't be hurt if I only had the WT Comp. Again, love both. They are different, and for my esthetic, I think I'd start out on the 14B. Both are dead quiet.

I’m getting one soon. It is capable of a wide variety of sounds due to the various modes & being able to gain stage in & out of the unit to achieve clean or colored compression. Love the vibe it imparts when doing lots of GR, it compresses a lot but doesn’t sound lifeless, squashed, etc. Great gear & company imo!

I haven't had any issues with noise, but I'm never looking for pristine clean with anything. How come you're thinking of selling your 286a? I use mine all the time. If you want clean, crank the output the slowly bring up the gain. If you want hair, do the reverse. Versatile unit.

Thank you all for your posts. I am reluctant to sell the 286a mic pre. And the post by jcoutu1 let's me know that I need to try different settings on it. I have an undertone 4 channel, and that has been what I have been using the most. I need to get back to the 286a.
As to the vocal comp - that is a tougher decision. I do not think I need the top sheen, and since the weight tank is less money, it makes sense to start there.
Thank you all for posting above.

Not necessarily, it all depends, but it's an excellent choice. I like LA2a's and 1176's as well. Right now the 14B is my newest compressor acquisition, so I'm still a little in love, but honestly, it's such an amazing "do it all" comp with a great euphonic tube vibe that it's hard not to love completely.

Longtime lurker...first-time poster(?)
I've a 14b on the way. WT-72, too. They're part of a tube-oriented side rack I've been putting together.
Looking forward to joining the Locomotive family.
Happy New Year.

Anyone know why Loco stopped making the 286a? Eric is a member here and should stop in and answer that. I know he's working on a 286B, and I'll be it's gonna be the tits.

Yeah, he's upgrading it. Sold out of A's and moved on to designing the next thing. I suspect it will be killer.

Thanks, Ward - That would definitely help. I’ve increased the forum storage a bunch of times, but I’m just going to have to delete old pictures. I’m not sure why people refuse to go to postimage.org, copy the link and paste it here.
