Inspired by the MA5 thread, I thought it would be worth a discussion of Avedis’s *other* preamp—the MD7. There are quite a number of sound examples of the MA5 out there (no doubt, it’s an older design) and numerous shoot-outs that incorporate it, but there is very little out there in the way or MD7 samples. A couple of users posted in the other thread about it but descriptions (“it’s like a less aggressive API!”) of course only go so far. So I’m wondering—does anyone have some recorded examples they can share of the MD7? I’d love to hear it in use. I’d especially love to know what they sound like used across an entire song, stacked on top of each other. Also, particularly interested in how it sounds on stuff other than drums, esp vocals, but at this point anything would be helpful.

I can send some samples. On a gig at the moment but will upload some this weekend. I have some drum examples (kick and snare), acoustic gtr and vocals. I love this mic pre. Use it on just about everything. What can I say about it that hasn’t already been said. The DI is something else too. From the transformers to his 1122 op amp. Just great. Super refined, API-ish. What made the API so great back when all you had was tape to print to, was that midrange bump. Poked a hole to make for some punchy drums. Not so flattering with a daw. The MD7 is every bit as punchy but without that bump which to me just translates as a honk when you take the physics of the tape machine out of the equation. IMO, You could safely use a combo of md7’s and MA5’s and never need to fire up any other preamps.

From the little I’ve actually heard, it seems to give a somewhat more compressed sound than the MA5, which I found very appealing. I’m curious about texture—I know that Avedis talks about cultivating some subtle distortion in its design, and I’m certainly interested in it for that. Very much trying to avoid a woody or plastic sort of texture, but also not always looking for the neve-style iron “ring” that the MA5 has.

was looking into getting an MD7, I have the MA5 and it is wonderful. I do have a CAPI Heider 500 Wonder if there would be to much overlap in sound. both API inspired
