Picked one up today from the guys themselves. Passionate gentlemen. This preamp is flat amazing. Three words: less-mixing-needed. Tight bottom, rich midrange smooth top, and a INCLUDED ANALOG 28K AIR BAND.. for 850.. My vocals sound finished almost immediately, it has the colour of the Neve sound but feels clearer and more open. I feel my preamp search is done for a long time. Great work Avedis!

I normally don't comment on other manufacturers threads but I have to agree here
The MA5 is a hell of a preamp. I love it. Congrats from us as well Avedis!

The MA5 and E27 are the bomb dot com.

I really liked the MA5...but haven't used one in years. Need to try it again.

There is no better preamp ever built, imo Agreed. His MD7 is a close second though.

Considering the craftsmanship is so superb I really am curious about their Transdrive unit. Extra transformers for the signal, may be really useful for me given I'm completely ITB. Give the signal more of that console mojo before entering digital, just cant decide between trying this or buying a second MA5.

I have a pair of MA5's and MD7's and I love them. They make for such a great recordman setup. MD7's on Kick and Snare and MA5's w/ 28k in on a pair of ribbon overheads: beautiful!

Now I'm realizing how badly I need them as well.

It’s SO good. Picked one up years ago, tried it on snare and it’s been there ever since. Incredible sound and workmanship. I’ve also got a pair of E27’s which are amazing. A Beyerdynamic M201 TG into the MA5 and E27 on snare drum is the business!!

Have NOT used the MA5 but understand where your coming from. I get the same experience with the Great River MP-2NV's ....! Especially on Male vox.

The MA5 really does sound great. When I tried one, I loved it, but concluded I preferred the oh-so-slightly hairier, grimier sound of my N72.

Was my go to on male vox and gtrs till I got the Avedis stuff. Still use the GR’s a lot too. Love the DI’s. To me they are one of the best neve’ish preamp out there. To my ears, the MA5 has a sweeter top end. Just by a knat hair though.

Does the MA5 have the Jensen transformer?

Does the MA5 have the Jensen transformer? Per their website, yes. It’s a proprietary Jensen transformer.

(But yeah I listened to his shootout—still waiting to be wowed by the heiserman.)

Always heard good things...will have to check it out.
Tube preamps are always top shelf for me, but for SS don’t forget the VP28.

Discovery of the day: Brauner Valvet X into Avedis ma5 = needs a pad with a loud singer. Gain at minimum, yet some phrases went slightly overcooked.
