I’d like to know how it compares to some of the other popular 1073 clones. I'm kind of curious too! I'm a little gun shy but I want to pull the trigger.

I own a pair, and I would love to be able to give my opinion so others can benefit. Unfortunately, I've been covered in business responsibilities (music is *not* my day-job), and in off-hours I made a decision to completely revise my studio set up. I'm almost done with reconfiguring/repositioning gear in the racks, and then I'm going to need to have some new cables built. So, I'm realistically on a "holidays 2020" target for getting everything running again.

I had one years back and sold it to pay bills, when thinking about it now, was totally pointless in the grand scheme of things. It's the single biggest gear selling regret I have. Actually, it's the only gear selling regret I have. ha. I have not liked the sound of a preamp as much since, despite having some really nice ones. But man, M160 into that thing on a Marshall cab is so $$$. Part of it too, was knowing Oliver built it. He was such a rad guy. I talked to him on the phone a few times and met him (with Terry Manning) at an AES show. Very warm person. Anyways, I digress. Back to the Neve clone.

I didn't ever get to interact with Oliver. I *did* own a V72s he had built (stereo) and sold it. THEN, I too regretted that decision about a year later. So, next I heard some clips online of his V78m, and patiently waited to find 1... and then another about 9 months later. So, yeah, I'll probably not ever be selling these. There was something special about that V72s, but for some reason I'm feeling even more love for his V78M. It's a tiny bit different to my ears (not a lot), but for some reason I like it better than what I liked about his v72s.

That to me speaks volume to your liking of their products. I always felt Heritage was the closest clone for the price point. BAE is cool but usually $1000 more per channel from my research. How are the Elite series sound compared to the AML or regular Heritage 8xxx? Have you compared any of the heritage elite to warm or Stam versions?

Hi, ChaseUTB, Those Elites and the pair of Heritage 1073/500's you just mentioned were purchased in the period that we were moving, so I've not yet been able to fire them up and do a head-to-head comparison. As for the Heritage 73EQjr's... I did already have a pair of those before I moved this Spring, and I think those are gorgeous sounding. My *hope* is that the PCB versions (Elite series) are not noticeably inferior in any way (from what I've read, they may sound identical). I hate pulling things out of my rack to sell once I feel 'settled' on a direction I'm headed, so fingers are crossed on those, for sure. I now own 2 pairs of the AML 54F50's, but have no experience (yet) with AML's 1073 eq's or mic pres. Oh, and I just installed a pair of the Stam Audio (Sowter version) 500 series preamps after listening to @johnkenn's voice test through those. I'm very familiar with his "pipes" from following him around on the Internet listening to his takes on compressors & mics for the past 3-4 years. (Love your voice, John!) I think the Stam sounds beautiful in those tests he did, and it sold me on having a "vintage" 1073 tone to go with my more "pure" sounding Heritage DMA73, and others. I hope this rambling post is somewhat helpful, ChaseUTB ! :-)

There you go. Nice move! Though I will never get used to what I regard as the backwards layout of the EQ. I know it’s the most common layout for Neve EQs, but it always feels backwards to me. Takes me out of the moment. Yep. I think it's because pretty much every frequency plot we've ever seen has low frequencies to the left and high frequencies to the right. I have the same issue with 500 series EQs that have the low frequencies at the top and the high frequencies at the bottom. Don Norman would call it bad mapping. (My pair of Heritage Audio '73EQ JR 500 series EQs get the mapping right.) But that's probably just my OCD talking.

Bumping this old thread, did anyone ever give this a go? What was the consensus on the Elite line in general?

I still haven’t used them, but based on samples I’ve heard, I’d love to try the EQs on acoustic guitars and toms.

Has anyone used the HA81a and can provide some feedback? Especially drums if you’ve used them them on that source.
Thanks!

Not wishing to shoot the fox, but I'm going to stand alone here and say the 81 EQ is my least favorite Neve EQ, I've never found it particularly inspiring for some odd reason and I prefer the EQ on a 1073 by a fair margin.
My other favourite Neve EQ is the 31102 - I really love that sound.
Maybe Heritage will cover that at some point?

I haven't used them, but I follow a drummer named Carter McLean on Instagram, and he just switched over to the Heritage stuff a few months ago. He has a few videos down about 50 videos on his Instagram that highlight the Super 8 and also the HA-81s. I'd imagine a lot of his recent stuff was tracked through all of that stuff. And here is a recent YouTube clip with the HA81a very prominently featured: And while we're at it:

Thanks! I forgot about that vids. First video is new for me.
I didn’t like the tuning of his kit in the 2nd with the HA81. Subjective, but I didn’t think it showed me much.
The kit with the super 8 sounded great!
