What do you guys like to listen through? Specifically looking for ideas for bookshelf / studio monitor sized speakers.
<$1000, preferably in the $500 range even.

Jamo s809 are my mains.
Good solid speakers without the price..
I'm getting some s803's soon for surround, but I'm going to see what they're like in the studio too.

What are the non-monetary constraints? Do they need to serve in a home theater role as well, or just solely for music?
Is the listening position fixed, or does performance need to be roughly the same at various points in the room?
How large is the room?

Our TV is hooked up to my receiver too, so it'll serve that function as well. Doesn't need to be a "home theater" centric thing though. It's a living room so I'd like them to sound good if I'm moving around the room or sitting in different spots. If I'm critically listening to / referencing mixes, I stay put in one spot, but general spinning LPs and such... that's not necessarily the case. Room is small. That's why I'm looking at bookshelf models. We have a connected kitchen / living room. In total it's about 750 sq feet. Living room portion is probably in the 400 sq/ft range.

I had a set of Paradigm bookshelf speakers for a couple decades, really liked them with an old Yamaha receiver I had.

Your room setup and needs sound similar to ours. Look into the GoldenEar Aon2 or Aon3. They can be had used in the ~$700 per pair, so they fall roughly within your price constraints.
