As a Windows user I've studiously avoided using an iLok dongle, preferring just online registration, but now that I have macOS and Windows on the same computer, it seems to make sense to just leave that dongle in there, allowing me to use all my software on both OSes. I've worried about what happens if the iLok craps out -- do you lose your licenses? What are the pitfalls of moving to iLok?

I had an il ok crap out. Never moved from its slot, non smoking space etc. I had to send the crapped out one to them so they could confirm it wasn’t working and then sent me a new one, shipping on me, which was almost the cost of a new il ok up here in Canada. They offered temporary licences for a week or two for at least some of the stuff on the il ok. Can’t recall if that a pain to get them to do or not.
So, that’s my experience with the things.
Cheers, Geoff

I finally went ilok after a decade of resisting. Since my computer is offline, it was a tremendous pain to get it working, but if you're online, it should be easy.
It really doesn't do much for me since I don't travel with my licenses. I only bought it because I couldn't resist some plugins that require it.
The dongle itself looks like quality, so I doubt it'll randomly die. If it does, you can transfer the licenses from the website again I believe.

My studio computer is not online, so iLok is a better solution for me. I think iLok is great for not having to authorize each plugin one by one when re-installing. Check out their website for what to do if something happens to your iLok. You can also purchase a Zero Downtime subscription, which will get you going right away if something happens. www.ilok.com/#!zdt-coverage

No issues here either ever. You can do a license recovery once a year too if something bad happens.

NOT. 100% definitely NOT. I hate it. And like svart, my studio computers are not online.

I like iLok. Like Jeremy, I’ve never had an issue in 15 yrs. Many (most?) of my plugs that use iLok allow 2 authorizations, so it’s possible to have 2 physical iLoks in case one were to break. Fortunately I haven’t needed to do that, though. And some plugs that require iLok don’t actually need the physical key, so check out that option, bombadil.

About 20 years & no complaint at all. Very smooth & quick updates & installations. Music computer is offline except for this.

Used iLok 1 and then 2 for over 10 years. No problems whatsoever. As long as I have the dongle plugged in, everything works like a charm. Of course it would be better not to need it, but for me it feels very worth it because it offers (or has at least offered historically) some protection for the developers who has put so much work into their products.

Love authorizations via iLok. Had iiLok's 1, 2 & 3 and they have all worked flawlessly. Probably used10+ over the years. I hate doing computer authorizations as compared to iLok. Mac OS's though.
PS - the Zero Downtime is worth the peace of mind. Absolutely.

I've got a couple plug-ins that use iLok, but I've been using iLok's online authorization. I assumed I could only authorize one computer, but if it allows two, I might try authorizing them on the hackintosh also.

It's totally up to the plugin company. Slate allows 2 authorizations, for instance.

If you're just using the cloud session for authorization then you just need to log into your iLok account on any computer and run a cloud session. You can only run one cloud session at a time though. So if you open computer B to run iLok cloud it will shut down the cloud session on computer A.

I use the new gen iloks. I have one in the hub and one still in box on standby. I think they are wonderful.
Let's say, for example, your entire OS or computer goes belly up. Your authoratizations from dozens of companies are already registered so there's not this big ordeal with activations and such.
I've spent 2-3 days at a time before getting new computers set up. Trying not to have to do that again, it's exhuasting.
I have several plugs with single dongle authorizations so those would be in temporary jeopardy if my dongle ever releases the magic smoke.
I keep the licenses on the dongle, rather than the local machine, because I'm just assuming that's easier to clear up with the authorities, than having to de-activate then re-activate all your licenses per-manufacturer, which is what happens if your machine (PC) goes down. I think.

Finally bought an iLok 3 last week. I had an original PT M-Powered iLok 1 and an iLok 2, but I had a couple plug-ins that only work on iLok 2/3 and wanted them available to two machines.
Had to reformat my living room machine recently and lost some disk-based authorizations, the iLok re-installs were a breeze by comparison.
