CAN CONFIRM - David is a GENIUS designer and after having heard a TwinFlick at a friends studio - I was HOOKED. It's THAT sound. Just as plinker mentioned. For the price - I wouldn't hesitate! Thanks for bringing this amazing preamp design back to the masses, David!

I went looking, I see Vince at Speck worked for Sly and Ike Turner when they each owned Flickinger consoles. I tried to help Mark Linkous with his EQ's remotely, but there was never enough info and I never got in the room with the whole console. Suffice to say the pots all seemed shot and unobtainium. Maybe an ultrasonic bath and lube technique could have brought it back, I don't know. Mark's blueprints (12/70) and pics showed flat-pack PCB mount Triad/UTRAD transformers, and the input sure looks like a low ratio step up akin to a Jensen/Hardy 990 design, maybe matching loaded like a CAPI/HEIDER or an ancient Altec.

I did a little simming and the Flickinger op amp from his patent wants a 1:8 or so for best noise figure. However, EmRR I think you’re right and the consoles had a 1:2 or something. Not sure why I think that, though.

it looks like a 3 digit resistor was marked out on the drawing I saw and a 1K8 put in it's place, which would still make it dang low from a modern perspective.

I’m really tempted to pull the trigger, but I’m still trying to figure out the sound-stamp of these. Can someone compare to something common? Like to the current API (without the input pad engaged) or something like that on drums or guitar cabs? Or even compared to those X73s in the picture; I had a pair for at least 15 years.

From my perspective, these do not sound like current API, as API has that raspy, crunchy sound and these are smoother. The 2x preamps that I found them most similar to are the UTA (which coincidently, he also has 8CH of in the mobile rack) and the Electrodyne 2501. Think generally of vintage USA console sound that is not API, and that gets you in the ballpark. Not sure which tracks the Flicks channels were used on for the 2x videos, but I'm not surprised that the tape markers show them on overheads, because of the effortless and endless high-end response. Also, I have 20-30 tracks of various individual samples on SoundCloud, if that is any help: TwinFlicks clips on SoundCloudThanks, Stephen

I'm speaking from the Skibbe 500's I have here.not thick buttery like Neve and not as pokey mid as API. totally agree w/ Stephen about American Electrodyne vibes I'd say very musical, smooth and I can't quite explain it but the high end on these pre amps are really nice natural and open. really reeally nice on anything electric or acoustic guitar wise. listen to some old sly family affair stuff.esp the vocals one cool thing is Skibbe sourced the original Triad Transformers from them in Idylwild CA.same exact ones from back then. I honestly don't see how anyone would be disappointed with this sound.they good

Very cool about sourcing Triads. I remember a while back someone from Triad posted on groupdiy wanting to know what vintage designs of theirs would be interesting to start production again, but then Triad got bought/sold and it went away.

Just in case anybody was considering one of these TwinFlicks at the introductory price, we are now down to our last 2x units still available out of our production run of 100x units. We are first building up 4x units for an order now, so there is a little bit of a wait time on a new order, but the price will never be this low, just FYI in case anybody here was considering getting one.

Alright, had to pick one up to try... I certainly don’t need it, but would have kicked myself otherwise. Looking forward to whenever it arrives (I’m in no hurry). My only real reference is using a Spectra Sonics M502 Pro a few times at a studio. I remember them having their own imprint... They weren’t thick, but certainly weren’t purist-clean.

Cheers, Geoff

These are now shipping, and our first production run of 10x units still has about 5x units available. They are $749 each, and if you want to order one, please email or message me. Later we will have ads up for them on FlickingerAudio.com and also on Reverb. Thanks to all who have been patiently waiting for these 500 Series versions to be released. Stephen
