Hello folks, I feel a little bad that I haven't been around lately. But life's been busy. Here's an update announcement. The V2.0.1 updates of PhoenixVerb and R2 are now available in the download area at Exponential Audio. The update addresses a longstanding issue, only reported by 2 users, but with the potential to affect anyone. The issue was a crash that could happen upon loading a second instantiation of either plugin. The issue has been present in versions going back to 1.5.0. There are also a few new presets in each plugin, but no new features. If you have been affected by this problem, it is recommended that you update at your earliest convenience. Other users please feel free to update when your project schedule allows. I've also added a little interface tutoral on YouTube that you mind find helpful. Best to all!

Love these updates because there's always new presets that are amazing. The plugs have always been rock solid on my machines.

Since we've been talking about VVV's small ambiences I thought I'd go through all the "small" presets in the new R2 verb update and see if I could get the same kinda vibe. Man there are amazing small spaces. Tons of them! VVV has a special something but R2 does as well. Going to play with PhoenixVerb tonight...

So what's the difference in the two? R2, imo, is a progression of Mr.Carnes work from the Lex days. Modulation plays a part in how these algos sound. Just to be clear R2 and Phoenix are totally different algos. R2 has that classic sound with a modern clarity as far as I can tell. I've never heard ambiences like PhoenixVerb. Clarity with no modulation is the name of the game. If Phoenixverb was a picture it would be a clear sky imo. When I first got it I listened to the tails for an hour or two because I'd never heard such a clean decay. beautiful. The Expo verbs seem to have less weight but take up the same amount of space as the other verbs I have.(VVV,Vroom,LX480 and Lex PCM)

I heard Michael interviewed on pro tools expert when these EA launched. He described the history of reverb development and the irony of people wanting digital clarity and all the artifacts of older boxes in their modern plugs: the original lex code was 8 bit ?
So he designed the one verb to have all the artifacts and the other not to. So one sounds like the classic verbs of the past : the other: clean verb, like you have not heard before.

I heard Michael interviewed on pro tools expert when these EA launched. He described the history of reverb development and the irony of people wanting digital clarity and all the artifacts of older boxes in their modern plugs: the original lex code was 8 bit ? I'm following this, but you're all doing a perfectly good job of answering the questions. I'll add just one clarification. In the most ancient of Lex boxes, the actual audio path was usually at least 16 bit (or 14-bit with a little cheating). The coefficients used in the math were usually 6 to 8 bit. There was a trick that could get you to 12 bit coefficients, but it was expensive. All this means that modulation created noticeable step values in the audio. Perhaps the easiest way to hear this is to take a box like a 480L and put a 20Hz sine wave through it. You won't really be able to hear the original signal very well, but you'll hear the higher frequency artifacts--a noisy, zippy, churny sort of sound. First time I tried that trick I was horrified. When you're passing more musical frequencies through one of those boxes, the schmutz is largely covered by the music.

I really like Valhalla verbs. BUT since i got these 2 exponential verbs i use them on 90% of my stuff. They pretty much cover all bases. With these you probably wont need to look at purchasing another reverb plug for years(not that this will ever happen). Now Michael is there anything else in the works???

Strangely enough I needed a small ambience today!! LOL " Cookin Kitchen" from Phoenix will probably be it but I'm pulling out R2 now to see if it's more appropriate.

Now Michael is there anything else in the works??? Always is. But I never talk about anything until it's ready to be talked about.

I'm going to download the Phoenix Verb Demo and give her a whirl. Hopefully, it's so good that all my mixes will be drowning in small spaces for the next year

Ended up using " Little Red Car 3" from R2 for tiny space. Killer. sounds like some guys playing snare in the backseat of my frikkin car...
